Should I go and see Athlete tomorrow?

I think zenie should endure them for the greater good of reporting back to us... :p

Please make sure to include plentiful mockery of any godbotherators in the audiene :p :D
I absolutely agree. Unbelievable amounts of negativity-for-the-sake-of-it on this thread. Zenie - go see, and let us know.

absolute filth. turgid on record, more so live. lack passion or invention, no personality, no nothing.

and there are specific god bothering lyrics (all that "house on the rock" stuff), but they obviously don't want to jeopardise sales by being TOO explicit about it.

dreadful arsedribble.

Not really...Zenie asked the opinion of the board, if people would go to see a band, and she got answers. It's negativity for the sake of it, it's negativity because most people WOULDN't go see the band.

i'm not a fan, but for free, i'd go.

beats sitting around on the internet whinging about bands you don't like.

trust me - having seen them, it's not. i'd rather stay at home and read about crocheting fucking winter scarves than drag my ass out to see those dreary cunts.

Er no. Free entry doesn't turn off your critical faculties or help you endure the gawdawful mediocrity of droning derivative fartbibbles like Athlete. Add to that you'll still have to pay for your transport and for the occasional drink - money that you'll see never back, along with time you could have spent doing something more worthwhile. Polishing your coat buttons or counting the number of rice grains that have slipped down the back of your cooker for example.

Athlete are shite imo, the worst of new the new bland band wave. Resistance is not futile. Negativity towards them is perfectly acceptable in my book; in fact it loud criticism of the tiresome record company constructs should be the done thing. They should start briefing against them in school, indoctrinating the youth against such affected, passion-free windbaggery from an early age...

  ;)

<Leaps to feet and applauds madly.>

Well it's been taken out of my hands as I just got an email aying he “had some problems with my parents and I’ve gotta go back home.” Which I guess I can read a few ways but to be honest I don’t give a shit really :D

Oh well someone else will have to go and report back for us then

My comment was referring to the posters who jumped in on the thread who obviously don't care about the op, have never seen the band and just like posting negative things cos it's an easy thing to do. These people upset the balance of the boards' opinion.
I'm not a fan I've just seen them once but I think they're worth a shot - if she's tempted to go then I'd recommend she goes and decides for herself.

erm, that's bollocks mate. you're making a whole slew of assumption there, and i don't think you can back any of them up,.

how can these people upset the balance of the boards' opinion, since these are people expressing their opinion on the boards?

Nonsense, frankly

This for example. Just no need

tarannau has heard the band, and thinks they're shit.

what is invalid about that opinion?

or do you suggest that even if we are familiar with - and detest - the recorded ouvre of a popular beat combo, we should still spend money going to see them live in order to be able to offer a fully-informed opinion.

and anyway, i believe that's known as enthusiastic hyperbole. or would you suggest we limit our posts to things like

"whilst not someone who finds the band athlete popular, i would nonethless urge the poster to attend in order to discover for themselves whether their pop stylings are to their taste firsthand"

cracking read, that.

Eh? How is stating your own opinion, when directly asked about a subject by the original poster, upsetting the 'balance of the boards' opinion'

Praise where praise is due and criticism where it is merited as far as I'm concerned. And Athlete are worthy of every bit of the criticism in my book - few songs can make me as downright angry (and simultaneously depressed) as the dire 'Wires'...

From which I can only deduce you're unfamilar with the work of Katie Menua?

BTW, I have no idea who Athlete are- there are simply too many of these dreary Keane/Coldplay outfits to keep track of. But don't go and see em.

They're shit. :p

What kind of 'not a fan' goes to see Athlete by the way. It's not often I trip and accidently fall into a gig, tripping past the posters marked 'Athlete' and spilling the entrance fee to the box office on the way in. Perhaps they were an unheralded support band, but judging from Glastonbury reports around me, you wouldn't stand watching too long if there was a bar around...

And yes, there's been some hyperbole from me on this thread. I may hate Athlete with a passion verging on the unreasonable, but I'd rather have a little humour in my condemnation...

And besides, they're not too difficult a band to summarise accurately - a second rate bunch of chancers shamelessly promoted to hang onto Coldplay's coattails, providing pappy tracks of easy listening pop-rock mediocrity.

you talking to me there?

i'm not a fan no. i don't fall or trip into gigs accidently either.
But given the choice between sitting around doing nothing interesting, maybe watching eastenders or dossing about on the internet; or going to see a band i've never seen before, with a mate, for free - its not a hard choice. Maybe i might even end up liking them
And if it is actually that unenjoyable i'll go to the bar or leave. hell i'd probably watch from the bar anyway.
Point is it's not gonna kill me and you never know do you? or do you never do things if you're not sure you're gonna like them?

Interesting. I often worry about this - is it valid to form an valid judgement of music in a vacuum - i.e. without knowing anything about the artists except for what you can hear?

So much criticism of music concerns what the album cover looks like, what haircut or drugs a musician has, where they come from, or their beliefs outside their musical endeavours. Does it matter? or not?

(I ask this as someone who lives int' sticks, and doesn't read the music press, so I download things pretty randomly, often based purely on whether the title appeals to me, and I'm often shocked to find something I've enjoyed is universally vilified on the basis that the lead singer is a twat, and I didn't even know it)

(Not Athlete, mind - they're shite) :D

I assumed the OP hadn't heard them before, or maybe only heard their single.
Don't get me wrong, if the question was 'Do you like Athlete?' i'd have said 'not really', but it wasn't.
But to 'Should i go see a band i've never seen before for free?' i'd say 'yes, why not?' after all they've sold a fair few records, so some people obvious like them.
maybe the OP would have too..
