Should footy chants be cleaned up?

Doesn't seem ironic to me. You seem to imply that all white South Africans are racist...

Yes, my point is that it's ironic that someone who should be well aware of the assumptions that many people make about white south africans and racism should rush into a thread to brandish people on it as themselves racist on the basis of their attitude to a childish paedo football chant.

:D

So racist and homophobic chants should also be tolerated?

All chants should be tolerated. It's not a family environment and shouldn't be forced to become one.

The end.
that's naivie. just because you dont class it as a family environment( ) does not mean that people should be allowed to be overtly racist / homophobe. i dont want to hear that shit, regardless of whether or not i want my family to either.

in my book if you are happy to hear it means you're happy to sing it. are you?

the more swearing and obese old blokes calling professional athletes fat etc the better

this never ceases to make me smile, a bunch of morbidly obese twats in tight football replica shirts, faces contorted with rage screaming about lampard, a proffesional athelete, arguably one of the best midfielders in england, if not europe.

I wonder what percent of football fans are BNP members. Going by this thread, it must be remarkably high.

There are BNP football fans about, as there are BNP members in all sections of society, it varies from club to club. Swansea have quite a few, their 'top boy' tooze is also the local organiser for the BNP. Strangely the red hand of ulster is occasionally seen flying at their games. I know a lot of swansea fans though that are quite active anti fascists.

I am aware of some BNP that follow cardiff, but in fairness, they get pretty short shrift from otherwise 'hands on' 'lads', who want nothing to do with their politics.

BUT... if we are talking percentages... if there were 20 active BNP members (which is being generous) in a crowd of 20,000 ... that is still only 0.1% which is hardly 'remarkably high'.

There are a lot of chants that are unacceptable. You don't get any overtly racist chants at Cardiff, if anyone starts one they are quickly shouted down.

However.... there is an uncomfortable amount of anti-English chants which i suppose could be considered racist.

*scratches head to work out if there is a contradiction there* :hmm:

There is one in particular about Harold Shipman killing English that, i am pleased to say, usually gets booed by our own fans.

I do remember some homophobic chanting when we played Brighton, but I am ashamed to say i was too busy laughing to complain ... "you only sing when your rimming" ...

just found this site while surfing http://www.fanchants.com/

Excellent stuff. It's strange having the chants dislocated from the game. It's a shame this thread's descended into a dickhead fest (that's urban!) as there is a lot of milage in trying to understand the historical and (indeed) socialogical aspect of football chants. Not being very interested in anything apart form football and cricket,do fans of other sports chant? Rugby I know they sing, but to they chant?

Also I've read that chanting in football didnt come in until the 60's before that it was rattles and whistles and nose making things. Still some very funny and witty chants from all teams.

Worth a listen.

I thought the Lampard chant was more to do with him being greedy with the ball?

For £80k a week you could sing anything you like to me.

If you sang the same thing to me down the park on a Sunday you'd get chinned.

In terms of fans being "offended" do you think this topic would even have been thought up when the support was still predominately working class... nope me neither

I can't see why that comes into it in this case. Are you saying working class people wouldn't get offended by a racist or homophobic chant?

Rugby I know they sing, but to they chant

I dunno about english rugby fans but there's no way a NZ rugby fan would ever be seen or heard chanting or singing. You'd be lynched. Tis gay.

In fact when I was at school there, anyone who played 'soccer' was clearly a homosexual and therefore prime lynching material. Anyway I digress.

Do english rugger buggers belt out a few tunes then? Oh.. swing low.... that's right.. Tedious compared to the fare served up at a tasty local football derby.

It'll be a sad day for the game if a few cretins are'nt alowed to call some-one a paedo at a match :(

i felt ashamed every time rovers fans sang 'one craig disley, one craig disley, he's a ginger cunt, but he's better than hunt, walking in a disley wonderland' :(

I just listened to some of the Swansea anti-Cardiff songs.

Facts play little part in most football songs, but the one about 'Cardiff City's falling down' seems wider of the mark than most. We've got a brand new stadium and the city centre has had millions spent on it!

They need to update the page and take off al the martinez and Jason Scotland songs :p

the on the way to wembley one made me chcukle :p

Wenger's never made an issue about any chants directed at him unlike this delicate flower

Come on Chief'!

I'd be insulted and fuming if somebody called me "Taggart" ;):D

Alot of football is about blind passion (supporting that is) nd maybe that's why ruby's never appealed. Not enough nutters supporting it. :D

As Gingerman points out AWs never said anything about it. It's not illegal, distasteful yes. But I'm sure AWs bank balance makes up for it.

I'm not a football follower but I was shocked to hear

sol, sol, wherever you may be
You're in the grip of lunacy
And we don't give a fuck if you're hanging from a tree
You're a Judas cunt with HIV

There are no depths a footie chant won't sink to from what I can see.

I find anything set to Lord of the Dance to be offensive.

Havne't read this thread, I'm going to assume revol's making a decent point about people just using their common sense and Discordia is talking shite, to everyone's amusement.
