Should footy chants be cleaned up?

When you divorce yourself from the context that "it has always been this way" and ignore the fact that it is football for a moment, you have to admit that any chant from 30,000 people that viciously attacks one individual is pretty fucking dispicable, whether it is racist or not.

So given that it would be totally unacceptable away from football, I suppose you then have to ask yourself if it becomes acceptable just because someone is playing the game. I used to think that it was. Now I just find it pretty unpleasant, to be honest. Along with a bunch of other things going on about 5 years ago, it put me right off going to the game.

It's cause anyone with any wit understands it to be little more than pantomine nonsense.

I think if it was stopped altogther there would be thousands leaving the game. Grounds have been stripped of standing terraces, there wouldnt be any atmosphere at all without the chanting.

Nah you can't sensor this stuff, it would be stupid even to try. Of course they've tried to stamp out the sectarian chanting from old firm fans, but while I think the people doing it are fucking twats, I don't think there's any point in trying to ban it. It never bothered me.

I'll tell you what started my thinking to shift though.

My friend is a Liverpool fan. About 8 years ago, he got a bunch of tickets for the Charity Shield match against Manchester United at the Millenium Stadium. So he went with his girlfriend and I went with the kabbess. She had never been to a football match before.

We were in the Liverpool section. There was one of those classic "bloke behind you" blokes... er... behind us. He spent the whole 90 minutes (or was it 120 minutes? Can't remember) abusing Van Nistlerooy and Beckham. Mostly Beckham.

Suddenly, I saw it through my girlfriend's eyes, and it was hideous. There was this great fat bald man shouting the most vicious, nasty, horrible stuff without pause for a whole game at some young bloke. There and then I just had an epiphany about just how horrible it was. And I could never do it again.

I'm not talking about banning anything, I think it's down to your individual conscience. Gathering tens of thousands of people to hurl abuse at some young guy is just fucking horrible and I no longer wanted any part of it.

Wonders if this gem, sung by Manchester United supporters to honour their South Korean midfielder Ji-Sung Park, would be classed as racist, anti-scouse or animal cruelty..

Park, Park where ever you my be,
You eat dogs in your home country,
But it could be worse,
you could be a scouse,
eating rats in your council house..

I wonder what percent of football fans are BNP members. Going by this thread, it must be remarkably high.

That would be classed as an affectionate little ditty. And also fact. :D:eek:

Football chants out of context don't work I'm afraid. They have to be heard/sung in the heat of battle.

I know the type of guy you mean and I think that is actually more offensive as its not part of the general chanting and is pure vitriol. Most chants, however offensive thye may look writtend own, are not actually meant to be taken literally and are just part of the banter. That may sound ridiculous, but I think football fans would understand, but someone straying in here from Knobbing and sobbing probably wouldnt get it if, iykwim.

The Koreans do eat dogs though, pointing this out is hardly racist, in fact to suggest it is is to trivialise racism.

If they sang about an Icelandic player eating whale or rotting shark would it be racist?

I dont think thats racist, south Koreans eat dogs, fact. Bit hard on the scousers tho!

Bearing in mind they're usually making airplane motions at the stretford end (those that aren't robbing their new striker's new pad that is) when songs such as that are being belted out I don't think its harsh..

I was being ironic, but my smileys wouldnt work!

Yes and I am sure that young David Beckham got over it as he picked up that weeks salary cheque of £50,000 or so pounds..

Sickest stuff I have heard from football.. well there is the Man Utd supporters who used to take bits of chicken wire to the games against Liverpool and then press their faces against it. The Ken Bigley chants that Millwall sung to Everton. And the chants of Aberfan sung to any Welsh team.

Earning good money is not an excuse for or panacaea against intense abuse.

Ideally matches should be played in a blissful silence :)

Name, names then dickhead.

Of the racist and/or xenophobic people in this thread? (no idea if they belong to the BNP, I was just using it to imply bigotry). I don't see any benefit to naming people, I'll just say that it's the ones defending such chants (yeah, bigoted chants add atmosphere. Right.)

Have you been to a football game?
