Should Arsenal tube station be renamed?

Chapman lobbied for 7 years.. so the poor Aresenal supporters could find their way to the stadium.
err...SEVEN YEARS???? there's DEFFO a prob there
correct me if I'm wrong, but ol' HC was still managing huddersfield in late 1925, in fact he moved around xmas to arsenal. the decision to rename the station was taken a few months before the official unveiling, as is the way with bureaucracy. those numbers don't add up (and besides which, a very old member of Islington South LP informed me that his branch sec was lobbying waaay before chapman was)

I can only go with my two seperate sources which suggest that Chapman was heavily involved in getting the name changed.

...and are we agreed you still know stuff-all about football? :p

Nah.. we have merely established that you're a footie anorak snob.. of the very worst sort.

Second source.. local history guide. (I'm afraid. ;) )

the name should never have been changed in the first place  but as hollis has already stated, how else would the arse find their way to their seats :p

i say change it back...then they can lobby for whatever station is nearest* to ashburton grove to be called just that...or maybe emirates :p

*if theres not a station near enough, they can lobby for one to be built....

changing the name would be scandalous!

we love you arsenal, we do
we love you arsenal we do
we love you arsenal we dooo
ooohh arsenal we love you!!!

see Hollis! trashpony and socialistsuzy are singing the right song.
and BOTH of them know more about footie than you do.

Fuck off Hollis

It should stay Arsenal. Not least because it'll still be pretty much the nearest tube station to our glorious new stadium
viva! arsenal fans united in kicking Hollis's arse! :D
btw, you do know, hollis, that the bloke in black is NOt one of the players, don't you?

The nearest station to ashburton IS Arsenal!

I'd call it something a little more up to date - how about "ole - ole - ole - ole - ole - oh fuck Wigan have scored <silence>" :p ;)

well, all those whinging spurs fan care in some way, or else they wouldn't have taken the time and trouble to set up both the petition and the website.
and ditto you, in some way, however negligible, or you wouldn't have been bothered to post on this thread!
me - I'd prefer the name to stay, but I wouldn't put up much effort to keep it; I find getting sentimental about railway stations is even more bizarre than getting sentimental about modes of transport. I was the only poster who was actually glad when the bloody routemaster went, as I much prefer bendybuses. so i'm hardly gonna man the barricades over this one.

why my dear sir, that's a remarkably pronounced and authentic scouse accent you have there....

NOT!!!

:p

in a pub, in a place where they don't HAVE football teams. or, in fact, footballs, IIRC. However, when I first got interested in football - which is the key point, unless you are going to claim that allegiances are formed in the womb - highbury was the quickest and easiest pro club stadium for me to get to.

it's gotta be the least distinguished road to have ever had a tube station named after it. I mean, Bow road may be a fucking hideous place, but at least it's a major road.

You are wrong. Chapman became manager of Arsenal in June 1925. Unfortunately, I don't know who led the campaign to rename the station. I've always read that it was Chapman but that doesn't mean it's true.

Petition was set up by Chelsea fans, as anyone with half a brain and who doesn't need a toob station named after the team so as to know where to go . . . can see: http://www.petitiononline.com/CFC100/

- see what I did there ? Clever, eh.

p.s. Can any Goons confirm the rumour that Cashburden Grave is on wheels, so as to make the next move around town easier ?

:p ;)

p.p.s. Ole !

It was renamed in 1932...

its been Arsenal for 74 years....

Even I like calling it Gillespie Road
I don't see why Arsenal get to keep the Arsenal part of their name. They got it from being Woolwich Arsenal, they obviously dropped the Woolwich part when they fucked off, but seeing as the Royal Arsenal is very much a part of Woolwich's history, I don't understand why that part of their identity got to go north of the river either. Bastards.

North London Rovers has a bit of ring to it.

in fact, now I come to think of it, you have neen known to enquire when 'tottenham' are playing 'spurs', and if that Sol Ferdinand will be playing.... :p

Watch it! My brother in law's asleep on the sofa near the computer and I nearly fell off my chair with laughter when i read that!

yes, and said arsenal is now a block of yuppie flats. screw the history. arsenal have been known and recognised by that name for aeons; in fact, when the british Empire amounted to rather more than a few rocks in the south atlantic. That's what counts

I agree that Arsenal should keep the name, but don't quite get what the British Empire has to do with it...
