Should Arsenal tube station be renamed?

catrina said:
good luck with them using holloway road...it's lift-only there, that will never handle the crowds! wonder if they'll add new services to drayton park, which will be the closest station now.

doh, just realised this was already posted. :o

There aren't that many steps on Holloway Rd... (I never use the lifts when I go to Holloway Rd)

Erm, they are required to build two new bridges over the railway between the Emirates Stadium and Drayton Park (the road). Doesn't this mean that the tube station formerly known as Gillespie Road is still the nearest to them?
.

Drayton Park at the Corner of Gillespie Road side I lived their till a few months back. Dont see why they should change the name the ground isn't much further from the tube stop

In 1932 Gillespie Road Tube station was renamed Arsenal. As Arsenal move away from Highbury later this year, shouldn't it revert to it's original name?

What do Asrenal fans think?

When I used to commute through there in the 90s you could still see the original name in attractive tiling, which must, therefore, have been there for probably 70 years or so.

You can still see the original name.

hollis, i ask purely as a matter of interest, and purely from the POV of one who stopped playing 3 years back, but....given your presence on this thread....you do know that big round leather thing is called a football, don't you?

I knew it! every true spurs fan knows those, like they know the reason for the original hatred of Arsenal.
but a footie ignoramus doesn't. trolled out! :p

All it takes is one person to trip, slip, miss a step or be shoved by some idiot at the top, and you've got all the fun of a tube accident with the garnish of "EVIL YOBS CAUSE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION" from the gutter press.

Arsenal fans can get stuffed..!!

I formally demand that it is renamed Gillespie Road

Arensal fans are a bunch of boring miserable smug bastards.. They can walk to their matches.

End.

:D
I like the idea, but fear it will be the SUVs of these goons rather than pedestrians that will be clogging up the arteries of Holloway

Change it back..... fucking ARSEnal taking liberties with Tube station names... anyone know how they managed to get it changed in the first place? I'd wager they did it on the snide in some way

Still, I suppose now they aint winning anything, I guess retaining the name of a tube station is somewhat easier for them.

Wow!!! shock. horror.

"a footie ignoramous" - Jezza being a snob again.

No suprise.

:(
no snob about it. those are BASIC facts for any fan.
the fact you don't knows you know absolutely f-all about football (no surprise there), and can quit with the 'pretending to be a fan and not a footbal-hating weirdo. see, i've done you a HUGE favour by outing you - it's the sort of lie you simple yokel types can't sustain. you can put yer cardie, pipe and slippers back on, now :p
btw, there ain't no 'o' in ignoramus.
ignoramus :p

Absolute codswallop!!!

Typical lazy anoraky football snobbery.. Its like going in the music forum, and being called out because you don't know as many bands as the next guy!

Complete rubbish Jezza..

Some of us like watching it..not regurgitating stats/facts..

Load of twaddle!

but you don't particularly like watching it, IIRC, and it's very rare that someone ever enjoys doing so when they know less about it than my 3-year old niece! :p
I've never met any alleged 'fan' who is less knowledgeable about the game.
or whose opinions on it are less worth listening to! :p

Total rubbish!!!..

You don't need to be able to reel off aload of facts and stats from the 50s to like football.

I suppose next you'll be wanting me to give you a complete run down of all Led Zeppelin's tour dates to justify that I like the band... total anorak snobbery ...

no, ffs, but you have to know vaguely what Led zep do (and have pitiful taste), whereas you are confused by those big white wooden things wihth nets on them, and why one of the players is in black..... :p

in fact, now I come to think of it, you have neen known to enquire when 'tottenham' are playing 'spurs', and if that Sol Ferdinand will be playing.... :p

I live between Holloway Road station and Arsenals new stadium and Im not particularly looking forward to match days, the area will be a nightmare.

If the names of the stations were chnaged, how much do you think it would cost to change all the boards and signs through out the underground system? Seems like a waste of money to me.

also a good reason to not touch a thing. If it ain't broke, why fix?

Exactly. Which is why Herbert Chapman should have never interferred in the first place.

he didn't! it was a local community initiative backed by the area's then MP and sundry local bigwigs - honestly, don'cha know anything?.
And is it true that you once asked someone 'so how many halves are there in this game?' :p

I'm afraid he did.

"Highbury's local Underground station, Gillespie Road, was re-named Arsenal on 5 November 1932 after a campaign by legendary Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman. "

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/press-centre/press-releases/press-releases-content.asp?prID=655

I'm not sop sure they've got that right. reason? simple; i spent a fair few years in Islington LP, which itself tended to attract both arsenal fans and community-history anoraks, and the received wisdom was that, whilst Chapman supported the campaign, it was the local LP (who've run everything in Islington roughly since WW2) who led the campaign. as a means of kissing voter arse, natch
also - tfl are experts in getting just about everyotherbloody thing wrong....
