Should all salaries be made public? Perhaps Tax returns be public?

Should income and or tax affairs be made public?

I wouldn't mind my current tax circumstances being made public, assuming everyone's was, because it isn't very impressive. But if I was wealthy I might worry about becoming a "target" for all sorts of people.

I'm pretty sure anyone who's really wealthy but not seen to be so, is very unlikely to be completing accurate tax returns anyway. Them aside I doubt anyone would be too surprised to find out who has loads of money.

I am sort of with you on that.

Most my life I've had good years & shit years, most likely on average hitting the average earnings figure plus a bit.

In recent years I've been doing somewhat better, but I've worked my socks off setting up my little business, often doing 70+ hours a week. I am currently only doing 25-30 hours a week. My clients get my services at market rates, but I beat my competitors on service, and I pay me team up to double or more than my cowboy competitors, I am certainly not some capitalist pig.

I believe I deserve the return on my hard work, but others could be jealous in view of me being sort of p/t now, without understanding I almost killed myself getting to this stage, and I don't fancy any fall-out from that TBH.

Doesn't the 1st choice automatically include the 2nd and 3rd :hmm:
It's late and my brain may have been frazzled earlier in the day :-) ..

I think "Income and all and any assets should be made public" is the most onerous because the value of assets are not included in the other options.

And the hardest to enforce. Assets are easy to hide.

Yes, I suppose that is true. Perhaps someone buys a classic car and keeps it, what value does it have in future years, and perhaps the only true value is if it is sold. And it wouldn't appear on any register anywhere.

Should publish everyone's expenditure details too. Fully itemised bank and credit card statements.
That might be one of the easiest things to actually achieve, technically, just order the banks to comply, but I am not sure what it would achieve, bit too detailed perhaps?

Just abolish waged labour and money and no-one has to worry. Simple!

Or Universal Basic Income at the same (generous) level for everyone and NO WORK AND INSTANT RETIREMENT for all ..... even simpler! :D  :)

</channelling daydream of never having to get up in the morning ever again before about 8:30 to 10:30 am particularly after September ... :( >

What are they actually paying Evans for?

I suppose that represents his Top Gear salary...

We don't have the mindset in this country to talk about money openly and honestly. Publishing returns would be nothing but a chance for a peurile peek at your neighbour's affairs with all the consequences that then come from knowing more about somebody than is actually helpful. Do I want my neighbour to know that I earn twice as much or half as much as he does? Not really, no.

I do.

I wanna know what my boss earns.

I want the people demanding this or that or the other from me to know what I earn.
As a practical matter, what is it you want published? The salary? The P60? The whole tax return?

In many roles in education I thought most people know what others earn anyway? My sister knows pretty much what everyone else in her school is on...

Not anymore.

Not with the the dismantling of the state sector.

Academies can set their own pay scales iirc.

As can the private and third sectors.

For instance, I've been teaching 11 years. That should put me at about £35,500 iirc.

But the roles I do would also be due various SEN and TLR point. So a conservative estimate would put me between £40,000 and £45,000 on the National Pay Scale.

I actually earn a shade over £24,000 :(
