Should a person who has failed 40 driving tests ever be allowed to drive?

samk said:
No, passing the driving test should be made easier. The more people die on the roads, the easier it is to answer the call 'we need tough new measures to fight terrorism, civil liberties be damned' with 'you're far more likely to be hit by a car'.

thats a very fuckin stupid thing to say....that they should make it easier so more people die on the roads.

and if you really feel that way...you need your head looked at.

theres nothing funny about that.
It's my sense of humour, I can find it funny if I want to. :p

I think I appreciated it was intended as a joke. Unless I'm very wrongly mistaken, I don't think samk actually wants people to die on the roads.

I passed today after five failed-tests. I've been able to drive in "normal" situations for ages, but a combination of circumstances and awful nerves before and during a test made me fail so many times. Had there been a limit of five failures, I'd have been even worse - at least with the current system there's a fall-back of always being able to take another!

Congratulations!

What would be your limit? How many strikes before you’re out? Think you’ve got a point though, I passed on my 12 attempt - and that was borderline - and I think I’ve had an accident every year since. Nothing serious. Prangs. Usually clipping parked cars.

Just can’t get the hang of it... :o

where do you live?

On a serious note some people who fail their test time after time could be suffering from anxiety from the whole 'test/being put on the spotlight procedure.

My partner took 4 tests to pass and to be honest I do not know how she passed her 4th test as she was so nervous.

Now she is fine after a bit more pratice and without the pressure of lessons/tests.

I noticed that she gets nervous when put under the spotlight and is at present really stressed at uni when having to present her work to be marked etc.

So in conclusion having to go through multiple tests should not debar someone from driving although I guess 40 tests is a lot!

i can't remember how many times i took my test - must have been somewhere around 8.
i've not had so much as a prang in 4 years, and i drive 20 odd hours a week, much of it in central london. i was just rubbish at my test, usually failing on 'small things' such as forgetting to check my mirror 3 times or something.
I have friends who passed 1st time after 5 or 6 lessons who have since been banned or have been in bad accidents.

talk about tempting fate.
I had my first ever crash at the weekend when i rear-ended someone at a roundabout. :o
massive gap, could have fit 4 cars through - so looking right i went for it, only to find the driver in front had decided not to go :(

*hands licence over*

yes they should if they have passed

I do think the driving test should be made a lot harder though....... about 15 times as hard

:D

Never tempt fate!

I did that once too :o

My auntie Madge and uncle Maurice couldn't pass their driving tests - they tried for years and for years they drove around with provisional driving licences on the pretext that the one in the passenger seat was "the instructor".

They did get done for it once.

The family tried hard to get them to stop doing this, but they didn't listen and drove around Hemel Hempstead, going the wrong way round roundabouts etc.

Neither of them ever succeeded in passing their test, but if they had, they clearly would still have been dangerous.

They're both dead now - stroke and heart attack. I have no idea how they avoided either getting seriously injured or seriously injuring/killing anyone else.

Then you shouldnt be on the road. End of.

AFAIC if you cant pass your test after 5 times then, no, you shouldnt be allowed anywhere near a car. Your not launching a rocket.

Clipping parked cars. jesus. I hope to god no one i know happends to be anywhere near one of those cars.

Thing is, if you're a commercial driver, getting 12 points through totting up isn't uncommon or difficult.Agree with the last bit though.
then you are a fuck wit and don't deserve to have a livelyhood which depends on you not havign your licence removed from you... duh!!

what your saying here is it's easier to get 12 points if your a commercail driver so they can get dispensation.... i wonder if the accidents caused by these comercial drivers and the public involved in them get some kind of comercial driver dispensation for their injuries... well...

personally i'd see the minimum of 1 year behind the wheel and 40 lessons followed by a two hour test (at least 1/2 hour on a bike) simple mechanics (change a tire, tire pressures, oil change plugs and points...) motorway/dual carrageway test, over taking test manditory re testing every 5 years and a health/sight test every year (these last two are complusary for racing drivers and frankly should be for road drivers at least on the track there's a only a limited amount of damage you can do to people...) people should also have to have a maximum weight to drive certain cars (sorry but 22 stone and driving a small car where the steering wheel is disappering into your stomach is not being in full controll of your vechiel. end off) and a host of other rules, including phsycological profiling of the driver...

but hey

to many people who are on the roads who cannot drive...

Incredible how many people you see driving around with underinflated tyres. Good luck at this time of year

I mean someone who makes their living from driving, shouldn't they be more concerned about not losing their licence and their livelihood?

Have you ever tried to complain about a dangerous taxi driver? Quite pointless IME.

having just come back from palestine i have to say cars on the road there were a sight to behold in many many cases far below decent scrap yard fodder here  mind you aside from the incredable turns of speed the noticable thing was that the drives were safer, they looked out and expected people to be in the road slowed down near children, animals, (sure they didn't indicate etc) but they are aware of the things happening on the road and are anticipating things far more.....

basically their standard of driving is morer attuned, ours in europe is lazy not as lazy as the driving standard in the states by any means but it's still pretty damn shonkey...

I think one of the biggest problems on the roads is people - usually men - who are convinced they're super drivers and incapable of errors.
