Shopping - what doesn't Brixton have?

I'd like a Wilkinsons - it would help me get over the lack of Woolies. (I swear, every time I need something, a year ago, I could have got it in Woolworths )

Almost everything seems to be available here. I never go shopping elsewhere unless it's for clothes or computer stuff. How about you?

Shop elsewhere for:

Decent meat (Moen's, although will now be buying from Farmers' Market when I can)
Books & CDs (Amazon I'm afraid)
Clothes

In fact it's really just food other than meat in Brixton for me.

Yep, I'd LOVE a Wilkinsons to fill the Woolworths shaped hole in the high street.

why does everyone want more chain stores to come to brixton? it's a bit sad really. the only thing we truly lack here is a decent bakery selling a wide range of fresh bread every day.

people have mentioned:

ryman - you can get all your stationary etc from the art shop above the chemist on brixton rd, or WHSmith even
wilkinsons- plenty of hardware shops around, like the one under the arches on atlantic road, and all your toasters etc you can get from argos
robet dyas - ditto above

it's sad because in britain we've pretty much swallowed the 'dream' of branded 'convinience' sold by the supermarkets and now perpetuated by all the other chain stores. do we really need a primark, a gap, a uniglo or whatever in brixton? or is it just that we're too lazy to go into the west end or wherever to buy clothes? there are plenty of clothes shops for men in Brixton for example - obviously it depends on your taste but there's The Real McKoys, The Baron, Morleys, Traid, plenty of places in the market and lots more close by in Clapham etc.

I've no doubt a chain like Primark would do well on the Woolies site but do we really want another massive influx of chain stores? has the opening of footlocker, carphone warehouse, WHSmith and Sainsbury's really improved the shopping experience of brixton, or has it just made our high street a little more similar to every other high street in the country?

Well said. I agree completely.

It saddens me just as much that people are talking about Moens as a decent butcher. In terms of where price and quality meet up, it's about the worst butcher in South London. The produce is horrendously overrated there. All it needs is Harry Enfield behind the counter and a giant sign bearing the legend 'we saw you coming'

I'd like another decent butcher in Brixton though. Outside of Dombeys (?) in the covered market, which does some excellent outdoor reared pork at keen prices, particularly the belly, and the Colombian for flank steaks and the like it's not a wonderful selection. I'm in agreement with the Hatter above though - why people are keen to bring in the same shitty chain stores that exist just a short journey away is beyond me. I'd far rather keep the majority of Brixton independent.

I agree with BH except to say that the clothes shops for men in Brixton really are very poor. Either laughable quality (the Baron), way overpriced (Traid) or plain gimpy (Morley's).

A place to get decent wine would be good so I didn't have to go to M&S or Tesco.

Apart from that, I don't think we want for anything here. I can't think of anywhere that compares for the range and quality of stuff we have on our doorstep.

Have you tried Michael's? Admittedly I've only ever bought stuff for curry goat there, but have always been happy with what I've bought.

TBH I'm fine for goat and mutton butchers, although (whisper it quietly) there are better options in Tooting atm.

I want for good ribs and beef mainly.

Cheese. It's difficult to buy regular cheese except at the supermarkets. I don't think you can buy a bit of decent cheddar cheese in the market.

Eh? Rosies, Wild Caper and even A&C all do excellent cheddar.

Is A&C the deli in the railway arch? I thought of that after I posted.

Rosies I've never thought of going into. I thought it was just a cafe. Wild Caper I don't think I know. Is it in the market?

Also - would any of these places be open after about 7 on a weekday? That's when I tend to do my food shopping unfortunately.

A&C's is the Portuguese deli on Atlantic Road. It's generally open until after 7.

All of the shops are open at the weekend too and cheddar will certainly keep.

In that case it's supermarket or nothing for you, wherever you live.

Several of the bigger shops on Electric Avenue stay open till about 8; I often use them to get vegetables and stuff. But there are certain basic things they often don't have like cheese or pasta or bread. Which is silly, because if I want one of those things I'll just end up going into Sainsburys or Iceland and buying my vegetables there.

While we're vaguely on the subject, anyone know where you can get wet/dry sanding paper stuff (I clearly don't know what I'm buying here), preferably in one of the finer (800 or 1200) grade?

Got an amp to try and repair and no idea where to get that stuff...

I'd try the DIY place I mention above (or the one on new park road) or the big painters/decorators shop at the north end of Streatham high road.

Halfords probably would have something like what you want too although it will probably be more expensive there.

It's not quite Brixton, but the Old Post Office Bakery on Landor Rd is only a short walk away.

Their bread is also sold in Brixton Wholefoods and a few other places.

To be honest though, I don't much like their bread - I find it rather heavy.

The closest really nice selection is at Herne Hill with its 3 bakeries!

(eta - I do like the sesame bread at A&Cs though)
