Shop clothes sizes

yes  or if you're not going to attempt to lose weight, at least give you a complex about it.

or I think so anyway.

It is... did anyone watch that programme other week with the guy who was trying to change everyday things to accomodate big people? I didn't completely agree with everything he was trying to do but the bit with the 2 girls on (size 20) where they had to go and ask in topshop and miss selfridge for big sizes i thought was awful. They were made to feel like outcasts or something!! :(

You can get a 20 in topshop and miss selfridge?!

Yeah i think you can in the ones where i live too but the ones they were going into in london ony went up to a size 16 in topshop and 18 in miss selfridge (and the 18's were just a trial to see how it went). They asked the shop assistants if there were any bigger sizes and they said there were plans to introduce bigger sizes but they wouldn't be put out on the racks, you'd have to ask for them  I don't know when it was filmed, it could've been a while ago but it was just an experiment type thing to try and prove that some places only accomodate for smaller people. It was shocking i thought.

It is bloody shocking. Why can't size 16-bigger be on the racks with everything else... I fucking hate shops that have a special "big and beautiful", or whatever they want to call it, section... it always makes me feel rubbish about myself when I am looking for clothes there.

Might as well have sections labelled so;

"Normal" people
Shorties
Fatties
Unlucky gits who are both short and fat.

Although, shopping in the "petite" section doesn't seem to carry as much embarrassment as the "larger sizes" section.

Has nobody told these people that the UK average is now size 16? Why aren't we catering for this?

/rant

Bikergrrl: Completely agree with you. I'm only size 10/12 but i don't like the whole bigger sizes section thing either in shops. I always think as well that as soon as you get into the bigger sizes section a lot of the clothes seem to be so dull and boring!! It's as though the designers think 'well as soon as someone get over a certain size, all they want to do is hide and disappear into the background'!! People can still be proud of how they look regardless of size!!

I was out trying biker gear on and when i couldn't even get some size 12 pants over my ass my fella looked at me all worried and just kept going 'aaah never mind' and 'don't worry'. I ended up shouting "The pants didn't fit, it doesn't mean i'm a fucking invalid!!" :D the next day i got some size 10 biker pants and the fit a dream! There's nothing wrong with me and i don't really have a problem with my body but i was still made to feel like a freak or something and that was by my own fella!! People can be mean man :(

I'm a size 12, and if the size 12 doesn't bloody well fit then I'm not going all the way back out the changing room to get a bloody 14! (if they were too big on the other hand I would go out to try and 12  ), its all psychological innit.

I guess that's why some shops do it. You can be like, oooh, in TopShop I'm a 12 but I can only squeeze into a 14 in (insert other shop here)..... so women tend to go to the shop where they can fit into the "smaller" size

Well, I am a size 14... one size smaller than UK average, so why should I be buying stuff out of the "larger" section???

I don't care about whether I have to have a certain size from a certain shop, couldn't care less about buying size 18 labelled trousers as long as they fit well and where comfy, but certain shops (such as Morgan) I can't fit in any of their stuff at all.

yeah, i agree with that, but I'm just too lazy to be arsed trying on different sizes (although I admit being kind of excited by the prospect of fitting into a size 10), going in and out of the blooming changing rooms. I hate clothes shopping, which is why I wear the same tatty clothes for years and years :o

I know, so why can I never find anything in a size 8?

*glad she doesn't bother with shopping very often*

I think you must be unlucky SZC... I never have any problems finding clothes that are size 6 - 12, but don't seem to go up to 14 or 16

When i was about 18 i was size 6-8 and there were only very few of those sizes in shops... now i'm size 10-12 and although there are (in most shops) lots of these sizes there seems to be SO many more size 6 and 8's

To me it just shows the changes in society and how many more people are taking after so called role models and becoming so very thin. I have a friend who's size 6 and 8 at MAX but she's always been like that, it suits her frame. I just find it worrying that girls who are not made to be that thin are dieting to excess to try and be that small. :(

:) I'm normally a size 10,, but lately I've been size 8(lost weight:( )

and i went to Next the other day a a pair of trousers size 6 fitted perfectly, i felt really embarassed asking the larger sales lady if they had size 6 in long,,
they didnt:(

How odd  (first paragraph) I suppose it will vary depending on the shop. Bikergrrl - I always see 12 and 14s! Sod's law eh? :D

It is very sad when you see women looking unnaturally thin - by that I mean someone who looks gaunt and whose size looks wrong on them. I am naturally slim and petite but it suits me cos....err..it's my natural size! I think that all sizes look great but really, women look their best when they are at a natural and healthy weight for their size/frame :)

<idealism>
It would be great if eating well, pot bellies and natural behaviour towards your body (i.e. no extreme dieting!) was the new trend wouldn't it? I'm sure the men folk would be just as happy too, if not more happy!

Yeah i'm all for women being really thin if they are in proportion everywhere and that's how they're meant to be but when they are unnaturally thin it's just not good!
I guess it's good to see magazines etc that are NOW celebrating women with curves or even just bigger women but for a long time i feel it was because of these magazines and such likes that all these stupid extreme dieting fads have become so popular.

Yep, that would be a great new trend!! Just people being allowed and encouraged to be themselves would be a good start!

I don't think too fondly of gossip mags and the way they focus on body shapes. Firstly there's the obsession with other people's figures, secondly there's the criticism, insinuation and belittling, thirdly there's the constant changing back and forth between insulting 'celebs who have pilled on the pounds' and 'celebs who are starving themselves' - it's like you can't win either way!

Some women's mags and gossip mags are just constantly telling us what is hot, what is not, who looks sexy, who looks fat, who looks like they're so obviously suffering from an eating disorder because they're a size 8 (shock horror). One minute a celeb is sexy the next she is 'rake thin', one minute she's beautiful and her hair is gorgeous the next she looks ugly and out dated etc....all women should ignore magazines and concentrate on making themselves happy through their own creative ideas and thoughts and stop focusing and comparing themselves to other women.

:) Oh its one of my insecurities,,
I'm 5'10 1/2 so being a size 6 sort of freaks me out,, I dont like being skinny and boney and worry others think i am this thin deliberately,,

being thin reminds me of when i was anorexic and then a junkie and then anorexic again and somehow it affects me and i get embarrassed and apologetic about being thin:(

I worry what others think too much!:D

I could rant on this thread for hours. I went shopping on Sunday cos all my jeans have died. I spent fucking ages trying jeans on. The closest I found to a good fit was Jane Morgan but pfff not worth buying. I range from size 8-12 and it pisses me off. I tried on a load of size 8's and couldn't get em up over my arse. So I tried size 10's and they fit over the back but then were all creased up at the front like lots of little lines pointing to my nether regions. I bought a pair of 10's in the end which barely go up over my bum bum but I'm going to stretch the life out of them when wet... while at the same time hoping they shrink round the front

But I've heard whispers of a shop in Bromley somewhere where they will tailor make your jeans.. take a pair in with you and they'll make it so they actually fit and will customise them however you want. Anyone know if this is true?
