Definitely off if there's carpet. And I generally find I'm more comfortable (holey socks notwithstanding :o).
If it's paved/tiled/wood floors, then it depends how cold it is...
I reckon off is more respectful though (at least in Japan)

shoes off.
my feet need to breath and the floor stays clean for so much longer -
i feel a little uncomfortable to ask people to take their shoes off but will make it a house rule when the baby is here because then we're going to spend so much more time on the floor..

when i'm around at friends i tend to do as they do, if they wear shoes i do to

Our floors are either tiles or floorboards so I tend to keep my shoes on unless I've been out for a walk.

I have a prejudice against people who get all particular about people taking their shoes off, even if they've got nice carpets. Dunno why this is, combination of it being a bit anal, a bit pretentious and it sort of implies that I'm too inept or inconsiderate to wipe my feet on the doormat. I hate the sort of household where you feel you can't even sit down for fear of making the furniture dirty.

Yeah, but you end up with a spanking sometimes don't you, ICB

It's regulated in our flat: Shoes off is the general rule, they are allowed to be on as far as the end of the corridoor where the coat cupboard is. exceptions are grudgingly allowed if one is already about to go out and remembers that something has been forgotten.

Despite it being his wish, of course, my ex can do what he likes.

Only if I'm lucky. ;)

It's amazing how two child footprints in close proximity can look like a big Dad's one. :D

I don't rigidly enforce a no shoes rule for visitors, although I will insist if it's been raining and it's muddy as my sitting room carpet is a really pale cream colour. I guess I kind of hope people will 'do as I do' kind of thing, but not everyone is observant and I feel kind of churlish and uncomfortable asking people to take their shoes off. Also, what if they have holey socks or smelly feet? Wouldn't want to embarrass anyone. I guess it's easier if you both return at the same time, like if someone comes back to mine with me, as opposed to me just opening the door to a visitor, how would they know? (Apart from the clue that's the huge pile of shoes by the door?)

I'm always a bit confused about what to do when I visit other people though. I'm inclined to take off my shoes, but if someone just whisks you in... or what if they have lots of animals? I wouldn't feel particularly comfortable taking my shoes off in the house of someone I know who has lots of cats, the carpet doesn't look particularly hygienic.

here it's whatever you want.. genrally i go barefoot if possible

but of course i abey the rule elsewere ... including turning the shoes to face the door even though that is a little ott i get a funny feeling if i don't

Hehehe... yeah some people do adopt a 'love me, love my shoes' indignation when told to remove their shoes.

Once someone has removed their shoes in mine, they are free to do what they want in terms of sitting, sprawling or lounging. The beauty of a shoes off rule is that even the floor is a comfy and clean place to recline and eat your dinner.

Thinking about it when I was kid it was because we were in the country and now because the streets of London are paved with shit :D

I think it's just easyier to get them on when you are going out. You are not alowed to let your socks touch the lowered shoe area by the door for fear of foot aids or something. Anyway it can be pretty tricky stuff in a small area. I don't know any Japanese who don't just point their shoes where ever they like. But don't you dare come into the house with shoes, step on the shoe bit without shoes or leave your Hashi stuck in the rice or you will be atomic suplexed by robot cat girl maids from outta space.

Bet you'd like that actualy?

nah i'd perfer it to be a foxgirl

useually i don't bother it's just when the person living there has their shoes like that (my family rents rooms to a few japanese students) i fell a bit out or place keeping them on of just ditching them by the door ..... i should probably relax more

Depends on what's going on.
If I have to go back out again, I won't take them off. Also, if it's cold, I would leave them on. Otherwise, I would take them off.

I usually take them off after a while, but I get moaned at for doing so,cos we have dogs and they're in and out the garden,so the floor is dirtier than the arse end on my shoes :D Allthough I do have a pair of trainers that I don;t wear outside very often,so I use them as house shoes.

I think I'd rather have to clean the floors after having visitors, than ask them to take their shoes off and possibly be wearing "holy" socks.
Or pongy pedal extremities.
