*Shirl's Poultry thread

Vivienne died on Sunday night. R.I.P. (((Vivienne.))) :(

I don't know what killed her. She was only about 16 months old and looked quite healthy but Wolfie found her dead in bed on Monday morning, so as far as we know she 'died peacefully in her sleep'.
Now we only have Zandra. I've read that chickens don't like to be singletons and as we are hoping to move back to Yorkshire soon and want to buy an appartment as opposed to a cottage, we don't want to buy another hen. Should we try to find another home for Zandra?

You probably know what I'd suggest, but then I am quite hard nosed when it comes to farm animals. Since one has just died, and you are moving away it seems like the best option really.

Oh I'm so sorry Shirl

(((Zandra, shirl and wolfie)))

yeh I would find another home for her. (Madzone???)

There's quite a few rescue places that will take her on.

Oh Shirl, that's really sad. I only just saw this thread and was getting all excited about your new chickens then come page 3 I'm feeling all sad.

Wish I could keep chickens. And ducks (horizontal ones though, vertical ones are just wrong).

Shirl, I'm so sorry to hear this. RIP Vivienne. :(

Yorkshire? Last I heard you were after a houseboat on the thames!

Aww Shirl - bummer :(

We find a hen has shufled off for no apparent reason every now and then. My husband found the Cornish Game rooster dead and bright blue a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't suggest you eat the remaining hen, they're more like pets when you only have a couple ( @funky monks ;)). I'd say rehoming her would be the best option tbh.

Oh Shirl :(
Have you come across any smallholders locally who keep hens? That would be your best bet for re-homing, I reckon. If I were you I'd be tempted to hang onto your hen igloo in case you move again....

the people up the road who already have some chickens say they will take Zandra but they're away next week and they need to keep an eye on her in case their hens pick on her so she's going to her new home week after next.

or consider holding onto it for when I have a garden and you're selling it off cheap :D

Me too! I thought about all the lovely stories we were going to get all about Viv and Zans life in lovely Shirl land. Poo. Sorry Shirl and Wolfie.... :(

Yorkshire

Was it the noisy hen that died, Shirl? If it wasn't then maybe the noisy one did the quiet one's head in to death....

Hope the other one's still keeping you in eggs :)

Yes, it was the noisy one, the other one just keeps strutting round the garden muttering to herself now. I'm still not sure whether to send her to live with my neighbours hens this week or whether to get her a companion. The thing is, when we move, she may have to go and live with my neighbours anyway :(
Still, I'm getting an egg a day and as Wolfie doesn't eat them, it's enough. :)

Really sorry to hear about your hen Shirl. If the other one is happy shouldn't you just hang onto her for a while?

But I was wondering about the ducks. How do you stop ducks flying away if you've got some? Do you need to clip their wings or something?

I like the idea of something other than me keeping the grass short :)

Just feed them good food. They won't fuck off if they're happy.

But what about when they see the geese fly over. Won't they be tempted to join them?

I really know nothing about poultry keeping.
