Lighter one on the right is Vivienne and the darker on the left is Zandra.

In my experience it's cockerels you want to avoid, not hens. Hens are lovely and there's nothing more domestic than wandering around with a nice plump friendly bantam tucked under your arm for a bit of company.........it's the poultry equivalant of telling your secrets to the bees.......

actually they dont look very big . . . i thought you were getting proper chickens . . .

like these :D

morning :D Zandra and Vivienne :D

Vivienne and Zandra say "morning all"..
They won't be getting a cock boyfriend for some time as Wolfie won't allow it but all attempts at changing his mind would be welcome!
Thanks for that link Mrs Magpie, I shall enjoy browsing :) ;)

There are lots of advantages to no cockerel. Firstly you get just as many eggs, but without a bloodspot (fertilised egg). Secondly you aren't woken at 4am every day by raucous crowing. Thirdly cockerels are bastards and treat the hens really nastily.

are you going to get any ducks?? i dunno why but i've always preferred ducks - they make such a great noise

...and ducks don't dig up all your seedlings and they eat slugs! I agree with you about the noise...I prefer it too.....when I get poultry again I shall get a pair of these.

Oooh, ducks. :) Do you know whether they get on well with rabbits?

Legally practically none, fanta. I have a garden 25 feet by 16 feet. Four hens would be happy there. I wouldn't have more than four. But anyway, when I keep poultry again it'll be a pair of Indian Runners. Beware though because there are a lot of houses in towns and cities that have clauses written in that you are not allowed to keep certain domestic animals, hens etc even if you own your own house.....

I haven't a clue....Indian Runners move really fast compared to other ducks.....good for training sheepdogs apparently.

WOLFIE please take note.

i will come and visit the second you get ducks :D:D:D (i'm coming soon anyways mind if you havent started hating me for my comment on your cat)

i know about 6 people who have/do keep chickens/ducks in brixton/london in relatively small gardens - so long as they are secure and have enough space to roost they seem to do pretty well.
