Shifting music to you ipod from your pc

Ok - I'm using XP service pack two - It usually says when USB hardware has been connected. The Ipod was given to my girlfriend on it's own, no dock. I believe it's an Ipod mini.

I bought one of these off ebay for it to be charged and to connect to the PC.

It's a charger/USB cable in one.

Hope that makes sense.

Hmmm.... Have you verified the usb ports work...? If they do it could be a duff cable, or a duff iPod... Though if it charges ok and you've plugged other stuff in ok, then I'd think its more a problem with the iPod.

When you plug the iPod into the computer, does anything change on the iPods screen...?

How did your gf aquire this...?

The USB ports do work (I've tried a mic in them all). The Ipod screen shows it's charging when it's plugged into the charger but does nothing when plugged into the USB hub. A friend of my gf found it on a bus but already had one so gave it to her - hence no cables or dock etc etc. I suggested handing it in to the police but which station would you take it to? Plus my gf is selfish and wants to keep it.

I think the lead is duff in terms of a USB connection.

Yep... I would nip down the Apple Store and get a proper one...

See, it was a dream come true when I found this all-in-one thing for a tenner :D

They're about £35 for the proper ones aren't they?

The Apple store is selling them £15 (not incl VAT) for a proper cable. And they work. :D

Still, pretty annoying how they didn't bother just making it for a universal USB cable

At least I didn't fork out for the Ipod though so can't grumble too much :D

Can I ask?

What sort of iPod is it? Can you tell?

What colour is the screen and is their a dock connector at the bottom, or is it on the top?

Why, did you lose one...? :D

I think it's an Ipod mini. The screen colours look much the same as a digital watch black/greyish and the USB (Also dock?) connection is on the bottom.

Do you want a track listing? :D

Just a thought, but maybe the ipod you've got is a firewire version - ie, not usb. This would explain why it charges, but doesn't recognise it.

Are you in London? If so, go to the Apple shop and ask them to try both types of cable.

Um... There aren't Firewire or usb only Ipods. Usb/firewire refers to the cable. And the iPod end is a universal iPod connector. (ie, you can use the same cable in a iPod, Nano or a Mini-iPod)

That isn't right. My firewire ipod won't work docking with a usb cable, and vice versa. It will draw a charge, but nowt else. I especially know this as everyone at work uses my firewire cable to charge their (newer) ipods, and they cannot link up with itunes using my cable. The cables may be "universal" at the ipod end, but the ipods are either firewire (older) or usb (more recent) at the other end.

The plot thickens

Oh for fuck's sake!! :D

If that's the case I'll lay a grand on this being a firewire one, what, with me not having a firewire card and all.

Hang on... I'm not entirely right...

But you'll need to find out what kind of iPod you have!

If the worst comes to the worst, I'm pretty sure I've got a spare firewire card you can have from me junkbox... If only to put an end to this thread!!

Hhhmmm.... Well my older (3rd gen) docks with usb/firewire as I use it with a usb dock at work and a firewire one at home... But fair point with the newer iPods...

Oh, I have the old USB on my comp. Which one is that?

(Could that be the problem ladies and gentlemen?)

USB 1.0...? I don't think so. It'll just be slower...

It says not compatible on the spec. I hope that's the problem as I've just bought a new caed  :D

Oops – seems I'm not a world expert on iPods...! But its a long time since I had to deal with USB 1.x..!

I haven't put the new card in yet, putting it off as I'll be triple mad with a cherry on the top if it doesn't solve it.

Oh, the cheap lead I bought is for recharging purposes only  I thought because it had a USB connection it was for data transfer too. So it's a new lead I need aswell.

OK, here's my situation...

Got an iPod with 16GB worth of tunes on it. I no longer have access to the PC where the MP3/4 files are all stored, and want to download a couple of electroplated's mixes from wrysmile's PC.

Is there any way I can do this without having to loose most of my existing tunage (it's all on DVD but I can't be arsed and wry doesn't have the disc space on her PC)? I've tried just dragging and dropping etc but the iPob won't show up as a drag/drop storage device...
