Shanty towns?

Yeah I've seen some footage from the end of '08 apparently the tent cities have been growing since '07 when the whole sub prime thing started kicking in.

I'll see if I can find the articles.

Last night, on some news channel I was half watching whilst eating me tea... The reporter was talking about the crisis, and about home repossession, and he said and I quote " this looks like the end for the old world order" which sent a chill down my spine.

I guess you're dealing with a whole different class off gone-wrong when generations of people are growing up dispossesed and living on what they can scavange from the things a society throws away.
Ok then they are shanty-towns in the US, but I have a hunch that the situation of people living there doesn't compare to those trapped in the vast corrugated-iron roofed sprawls of India, South America or Africa etc. Not trying to say the yank shanty dwellers have it easy, but the roots of their poverty are much shallower.

The point is this is happeningly in the US, the richest country in the world.

Why have they not got a safety net for people there? That's what makes it shocking.

Because a safety net would be European style socialism. This is the mantra of the Republicans & they are yelling it more than ever now. It's supposed to terrify us.
Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell warns of "the Europeanization of America," Newt Gingrich warns of "European-style socialism," 2012 hopeful Mitt Romney warns that America might morph into "government-dominated Europe." and a top conservative Web site has sounded the alarm by posting a photo of the Swedish flag, which perhaps is intended to warn us that, failing vigilance, we, too, will be saddled with onerous un-American concepts such as cradle-to-grave health care.

So here we go again with the Euro-bashing, an update of the '03 campaign to ridicule the French and Germans for failing to back our invasion of Iraq, to speak derisively (as Donald Rumsfeld did) of "old Europe," to boycott Euro wines and eat only "freedom fries." The word now is that Obama will compel Americans to mimic those effete and lazy Europeans, for whom (in the words of conservative commentator Mark Steyn) "nothing is certain except death and welfare."

Bravo to France and Germany his week for saying it loud "fuck Americanization, pouring money into the banks instead of regulating the fuckers is NOT COOL maaan."

Say no to Americanization. We've a civilisation here, our neigbours welfare is our concern, we frown on bailing out the billionaires (well, cept Gordon of course), that's all a good thing.
