Shambala 2009

So my only experience of festivals is raves, great! and one glastonbury (which I hated). I lost loads of stuff there and everything got trashed.

I've been talked into this one by my Wife and Sis in law and was well up for it until recently (my depression seems to be kicking off again (work) :( ) but have suddenly become quite reticent and nervous taking the family, tent and all the gubbins that goes with keeping a family fed and sheltered for the week. I keep flashing back to my Glastonbury experience.

I know it sounds very paranoid and stuff but how is this gonna differ from my experience of Glastonbury and should I budget for losing the tent etc?

If anyone can shed some light on this for me I would be grateful.

It will differ becasue you are never far from your tent, people look out for eachother (and each others kids), you wont spend half your time checking where the kids are, your chances of getting robbed are reduced massively and you wont be surrounded by people only there to rip you off for overpirced tat. Much better than Glastonbury.... certainly for families.

Shambala's lovely - like Endorse It with more eco-oriented stuff, more reggae.

It's nowhere near as drippy hippy as some people on here seem to think it is.

After Endorse It, I'd definitely put that as my fave festival (I did prefer the music at Shambala to Endorse It when I went about 3 years ago actually) but I can't usually make it cos it's my dad's birthday weekend then.

It's got the atmosphere of an old skool free party in the countryside - really random, anarchic, mad, friendly, and totally non-corporate. Like a miniature BGG without the new-age spiritual element (which eventually put me off the BGG - in the olden days it was hardly there at all!). :)

I definitely want to go again sometime.

smaller festivals don't tend to have the theft problems that bigger festivals have - big chill is something like 50,000 tickets.. shambala is 8,000 this year I think, so it's really not attractive to the thieves, especially as it's on the same weekend as reading/leeds.. there's never been a problem with theft at shambala (I work for them, and know most of the production team as friends). I really wouldn't worry about theft, and shambala is family friendly, though I've no kids so no personal experience, friends took their babies last year and will be taking their toddlers this year.

Big Chill is not 50 000

More like 20 000

For the old skool feel, try wattsfest (500, with no plans to get bigger, said the farmer whose field it is in)

:)

Just got a ticket! Wanted to work it, but no cigar...

Big Chill was 40,000 + extras (those who fence jumped n stoof), felt like a very big n busy festival to me, I was surprised actually.

Hoping Shambala shall be the real chilled 'un

I don't where I'm going. I may have had an email giving directions but I don't have it now only got my e ticket saved.

I also want a meeting point such as pub to meet friends who are coming from elsewhere if anyone has a suggestion.

Thank you..:). I'm really looking forward to this as going with a lovely group of friends and will meet up with old and new friends whilst there. Also loving the surprise element of the music.

What's the weather forecast like for it? Just wondering how many jumpers and waterproofs to take, or will it be all t-shirts and strappy tops and flip-flops?

Weather looks although it will be rainy and sunny on and off and then mostly sunny on Sat and sun. I'd say take it all!!

Gona take wellies... just in case, what with today the ground might be a bit waterlogged...

Excited! Still trying to sort out how to get there from the south west - Bath/bristol area, though. Ahhh fuck going through London on the train.

:)

Yay...think I'm finally packed. Still got a bit of faffing before we hit the road such as beer & food & petrol.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend..:) I'm going to 'out' myself and say I will be wearing a pink wig and a purple prom type dress with sequins all over on Saturday..:) If you see me feel free to say hi and share a drink x

i overslept and missed my lift so i'm on the train. And i've just realised i forgot to print off the ticket. Do you think they'll let me in if i show them the email on my phone? :hmm: i'm so crap i'm annoying myself.

I had a cracking time :) First festival mind, so I've nothing to compare it to. First camping experience too. I crippled myself on the first day to some Ska, spent the second barely standing for Dub and it was all good.

e2a: Sound Of Rum were excellent, best I heard, the MC at least, Katie Tempest was it?

e2a2: Why was the Wondering Word tent so tiny? Had some of the best stuff on, packed whenever I was there and yet my tent wasn't that much smaller. And grrrr at the fucks who thought a hectic tent with a band that people had obviously made an effort to come to see was the best place to either sit on the floor doing balloons or have long conversations as they tried to flirt with each other. Alternated between enjoying what was going on and wanting to punch them in the back of the head.

I had a fucking wicked time. Definitely messy and crazy, but with a very positive, constructive vibe too. Had some fun at the workshops and a few crazy days doing speed n tripping. Met some rather lovely people, and the weather was nae bad at all really. Pretty fucking cold most nights though! Brrrrrrr. The lovely fire was a godsend man!

Saw some sick music; the Hynotic Brass lot were v. cool, as were Zion Train, Quantic, Mungo's Hi Fi, The Egg, DJ Die, Cheeba, Kundama, most of the spoken word things and some wicked reggae in rebel soul. Lots of pretty good electronic stuff I forget, generally I just followed my ears n was rarely disappointed. The acrobatics tuff Sunday was well cool too! One of the best festivals i've been to this summer I think (although they've all been good). The site was small and lovely, compact but maze like enough to always be finding new stuff. Only found the woods on the last night; that was pretty cool! Got some fairly ace photos I might put up later, tired now from days of speed, and despite the sleep n food today I need to kick up some zzzzzs.

Hope people had fun and got back ok, seemed like a great vibe generally, i didn't see anyone having a crap time or anything. Glad I went! :)

My first time at Shambala, and I really loved it. Proper old school vibe, minimum security, wasn't even aware of being fenced in.
Loads of funny little independent things going on... The huge Saturday fancy dress parade was really fun, I think I one of very few people who didn't actually dress up. It was amazing. Went to a Krump workshop...lots of good music.
I thought it was like the Big Green, only with much more fun allowed.
I will definately return.

Took the family, had an ace time with the fairies! :D
Very tired though....

Likewise - my first festival with the twin toddlers....... late nights + early mornings = hard graft but we all had a great time. Never been to Shambala before, in general the music, particularly on the main stage was not really my bag but I managed to find sufficient dubstep / jungle to fill the few windows that arose for mini rave-ups.

I took a hire car and some numpty managed to open their door on to it and made a pretty hefty dent so I was preparing myself for the inevitable loss of deposit etc on returning the car this morning but they were surprisingly reasonable so all is well in the world:)

SHAMBALA!!!

Great festival...Got back yesterday, slept on and off all day and night. Mushrooms/ speed/ cider :D

Lots of good stuff, Lakeside stage was favourite, lots of country dancing, Toy Hearts, Zion Train, and last two songs of every band we came across, tightrope walker on top of Social Club tent, meeting an Urbanite! Fire, fancy dress, sunset, lanterns... :)

Yep :D

Did you see the fire-lanterns go up into the sky on Saturday? Did they stop the music where you were... and play a song about coming together in love and harmony?
