shakespere productions

Saw Henry IV part 1 the other week at the Barbican.

Anthony Sher as Falstaff is fantastic. Looked at a review afterwards and there was lots of praise for the others, too, but I thought the rest of the cast was a bit ordinary, tbh. Nice unfussy production, though, and I enjoyed it.

Sometimes I think audiences would benefit from having actors miked up.

I had a brief career in theatre... northern broadsides were doing I think a condensed version of the passion and I spent a week backstage in this big old stone mill building nailing together the cross that jesus was to be crucified on, just before easter.... spooky. I think the thing fell apart or fell over or something during the crucifixion scene on the opening night.... fuck knows if that last bit is 100% true tbh but it is 100% how the story has been remembered in my head now so thats close enough to true

Did it injure/kill anyone? Did a small Belgian man with a very precise moustache turn up and start asking awkward questions at any point?

As an aside, I once fell asleep during an Anthony Sher performance. I awoke to find his eyes locked onto me as if to say "HOW DARE YOU FALL ASLEEP DURING MY ACTING, BOY!"

:D

Apparently, when Richard Griffiths was on stage and a mobile phone went off, he'd stop acting and stare at the person whose phone it was until it stopped ringing. Then pick up seamlessly from where he left off.

Just seen Cheek by Jowl's The Winter's Tale - absolutely fantastic. A pared-down set, inventive, witty, thoughtful production, compelling acting. They are touring round UK and Europe - well worth making the trip. Cheek by Jowl | Calendar
