Sgt Pepper 50th Anniversary (1st June)

danny la rouge I bow to your technical knowledge in respect of music and I have to look at it from simplistic terms....I can't believe that the Beatles were looking at and analysing aeolion modes to make a song sound sad. I think, like many around at the time; Yes, Floyd Etc. they were experimenting with different sounds to get the mood and sound they required.

I think Goodall said something along the lines of "McCartney wouldn't have deliberately set out to write a tune in the aeolian mode. He'd have done it instinctively, because he would have been familiar with English and Irish folk songs written in that mode". That's probably true.

But also, it's well known McCartney was interested in experimental music. He attended avant guard music events. He is known to have been into free jazz, especially Albert Ayler. He'd have been well aware of the free jazz interest in modes. He was pretty hip, despite his image now.

I dont subcribe to that view - Lennon and Harrison were also the talent. McCartney takes a lot of stick and wont get the credit he deserves for his original work until he is gone.

He was the real talent in the band, that should be clear by now.

The beatles wrote some amazing songs but by christ I wish they had just a *slightly* more inventive drummer. I used to dread their tunes in Rock Band if I was on the drums cos I knew I'd be playing a non-stop backbeat for 3 minutes.

The drums on A Day in the Life are rather like Frankie Dunlop's on Monk's Dream. Check this out and you can hear the influences all over the place. 'Derivative,' in relation to Ringo's playing is perhaps is a better word.
