This is just daft now. Lydon's been an eejit for years but what he's *never* been is a racist. Bear in mind, he was at the height of his fame in the 70s, a decade when Jim Davidson, the Black & White Minstrels and Bernard Manning were all accepted primetime mainstream family viewing.

And along comes Lydon- during racially polarised times when the NF's in the ascendancy, Thatcher's blethering about "alien culture", at the forefront of a predominantly white, initially politically ambiguous youth subculture,- and he explicitly states an affinity with the likes of Dr Alimantado and Prince Far I, getting described by the NF's Bulldog journal as a "white nigger" for his pains.

If he WAS racially abusive obviously he's a cunt and deserves to be showered with shit every time he shows his warty face but as Lydon's anti-racist 'credentials' are as beyond dispute as Bloc party's wanker credentials (not to mention the fact it is more likely the 'security' responsible may have been appointed by the festival rather than having anything to do with Lydon, who usually just travells about with his best mate and childhood friend from Finsbury park) i suspect there may be more to this than initial reports.

BTW Did you know that McLaren has publicly said that Richard Hell was his inspiration for the way he dressed The Pistols. Lydon probably isn't racist, fair enough, in fact he nearly certainly isn't. Someone in his entourage made the comments which, regardless of how clever people want to be about their definition evidently struck their target, their black target, as being racist. Plenty of racist comments are made out of ignorance by people who are too stupid to see their meaning and in hindsight it's sometimes easy enough to see that they were hollow but if you're the target at the time you're unlikely to take put great thought into it are you? If this situation had arisen between anyone else and anyone else then by U75s standards it would've been clear cut, but because it's been spun as Lydon, Punk Legend vs Indie shite the real issues been completely blanked.

If whatshisface feels the abuse and fight were racially motivated then of course he's got reason to report it. We, in all honesty, know fuck all about the details so all those twats who are insulting him for taking offence are just talking shite. Attack the press for making it all about Lydon, not the fella for not wanting to have the shit kicked out of him by people he percieves to be racists.

From all accounts he always was. I think some old Finsbury Park Ted mate of his kicked the shit out of Joe Strummer for being middle class while he looked on in some club in 77. And there was all kinds of stories about the 'Three Johns' being fairly nasty to all and sundry which was him, Jah Wobble and Sid Vicious before they got famous. Wobble freely admits now he was a cunt back then. But dysfunctional made Lydon what he was and Editor is bang on. For anyone who was around in 77/78 the Pistols and particularly him had something which was genuinely unsettling. Look at the early films of them and the presence he had. No one now comes near, maybe early Iggy or Hendrix. He had that intensity and anger that said you either understand this or you don't, and a whole generation responded.
