wishface said:What does cultural history have to do with it; I think the music has no merit whatsoever. I have more respect for people who take the time to learn their craft and learn how to play. Punk just devalues that completely which I find at the least disrespectful.
The only moron here is you, you abusive prick.Dubversion said:You asked why people liked them. The reasons for that involve a great deal of cultural context.
if you're going to argue about music and culture, try not to be a total fucking moron, it doesn't move things along.

couldn't find a picture of a punk spitting at you, but you get the idea!
I was born in 73 man.Paulie Tandoori said:So you were, what, 2 years old when the Pistols happened then? Cos you're missing the point by a country mile. The Pistols were one of the angriest and most innovative bands that had ever been heard when they blasted onto the UK music scene, they were largely responsible for kickstarting this thing called punk (albeit largely by accident as well it would appear), and the reference to the Rich Kids is in terms of another band, you doofus.
Trying to frame the energy and excitement that they were a part of in the context of MTV and the X factor is pointless. I can still remember the sheer visceral excitement of listening to Anarchy in the UK and Never Mind the Bollocks cos it was so so different to anything i'd heard before. The fact that they could barely play their instruments inspired so many people and so much more of the DIY ethic than i think you'll ever realise.

But that's the point, punk promoted this stupid idea of rock being the puriew of the upper artsy fartsy classes. That view is divisive bollocks.futha said:fuck that. punk proved anyone can start a band and you dont need a music degree and an encyclopedic knowledge of theory to write good songs. look at a band like the buzzcocks, nirvana or ramones. great simple songs.
Maybe so, doesn't bother me. I just think they were better than the Pistols, who were themselves a manufactured band. I don't look at them as the saviour of all art and the only voice of relevance in society.rollinder said:you do realise that if the Pistols had never happened The Clash would never have existed?

Anyone CAN make great music, but if they can't be bothered to learn how to fucking play and just want to scream and shout because life is hard (it's hard for everyone, Mr Lydon, get a fucking life) then they can fuck off if they believe they have anythign relevant to say. Or, conversely, just because you went to art school or learned to play the guitar doesn't invalidate what you do.
Besides I like my rock and roll to have a bit of theatre.
Better that than being covered in snot.
Punk is self defeating; look at these fuckers now, they're a joke. All about the money. Ooh, how ironic the Pistols comeback was. We know you're only in it for the money; your music is still bollocks though. Utter utter bollocks.
They're about as relevant as the royal family themselves.
belboid said:learn the craft? depth? theatre? you realise you sound like precisely the type of musico that the pistols (rightly) wanted to destroy?
wishface said:bollocks.
if you want to destroy music then you are a cunt.
A very stupid ignorant and sad cunt.
I've played bass for almost twenty years, i've spent time developing and understanding the instrument so i can play stuff and play well. That doesn't mean playing twenty minute bass solos or cheesy jazz fussion stuff by guys wearing bad 80's suits. It's the sort of development that artisans from around the world develop, western or otherwise. It's got nothing to do with ego.
Problem with punk is that it just smacks of jealousy and indolence.
I'm all for people making music. But don't give me this crap about 'rightly' destroying music just ebcauseyou are too fucking ignorant to understand it.
another one who cant read - the word is 'musico', ie the kind of dull po faced wanker who wishes to take all the spark vitality exhuberance and sheer fun out of popular music.futha said:the idea of 'destroying' music is fucking ridiculous IMO.

how does being able to play an instrument take all the fun and spark and vitality out of playing an instrument? Who said ignorance is bliss? Flea? Hell no, tell him he's a sad wanker! The Chili Peppers came from the punk ethic and have learned to play - and play very well. And they do it wihtout being sad wankers or miserblae jealous losers.belboid said:another one who cant read - the word is 'musico', ie the kind of dull po faced wanker who wishes to take all the spark vitality exhuberance and sheer fun out of popular music.
Rush are a great band. Though I think their best years are behind them. They can still play, sell albums and sell out tours. They've remained one of the most succesful and popular and indeed commerically succesful bands around - and all on their terms (regardless of whether you like them). Can't say the same about the Sellout Pistols. Rush were once descriuned as the biggest underground band in the world. A loyal fanbase (certainly with it's fari share of musos) and the respect of their peers. Shit, if that's something worth destroying then shoot me now. I wouldn't want to live in a world with that attitude.futha said:my mistake i misread the post. very well, i hate people like that too. i dont dislike people who can play an instrument though. i dont want to listen to something like Rush for example but ill happilly rock out to Lynard Skynard - Free Bird. i think there is a bit of reverse snobbery involved in punk

wishface said:Nothing to do with money whatsoever. I'm not rich yet I'd much rather listen ot the music that punk loved to hate but I'm no snob and I certainly ain't rich. I just respect the ability of people who have learned and practised and are able to write good songs on the whole. Punk is fuck all, and if you are prepatred to settle for that musically then I find that pretty sad. It's got no more value than MTV or the X Factor.

i haven't contradicted myself at all. They can PLAY, they aren't ignorant of technical ability at all. Far from it. Meanwhile the Pistols revel in ignorance and decry anyone else for having it. That's just jealousy.Dubversion said:so you contradict yourself again
