Settling A Cat Into A New Home

oddworld

building a lego house
Bailey , Gawd love him - has woke me up two nights in a row meowing and howling like a good'un.

I'm keeping him in as I've moved house , he lived in my previous house since a kitten so has never experienced change before.

I was going to keep him in for a week , should it be longer , he is driving me bonkers now , let alone in two weeks time.

Tonight I'm going to get his toys and spend some time playing with him to see if that helps , thing is he sleeps all day and then is wide awake at night.

I've got up now , 1 hour early and he has settled

/tired odds :(

Maybe you need to tune in to this....

Is he used to being able to go out at night? Ever since Lottie got run over ( :( ) I've been trying to keep Harve in at night by locking the cat flap. He wasn't keen at first, and would wake us up in the night be miaowing (only once, he's a polite cat). He seems to be getting used to it now though, so maybe Bailey is just going through a difficult period of transition. :)

maybe he's just a bit confused and scared by being in a new place? perhaps spending time playing with him n stuff will help show him that everything's ok?

we kept our 2 boys in for a month odds' before we even let them near the garden... and then it was supervised outings.

It's taken them a year to get fully used to the change as only the last cpl of weeks have they started going out all day every day.

love love love love love is what the wee un needs, & reassurance.

he should be fine in time.

Jebus you two... why not shove the cat up his hole instead.*

* I'm excited today so have a get-out claws, cos my brother is en-route from Ireland.

I think you mentioned he was stressed before you moved, and like people some cats deal with change better than others.

Personally I'd keep him in until he seemed comfortable in the new place, and if possible only let him out when you're home for a while after that. Until he sees his new home as being the place to go to be warm comfortable & fed, indoors is the best place for him.

I do sympathise, when my cat lost his brother he was difficult for a while, they were 13 & had been together all that time, but settled in the end. Your Bailey will too, it will take a little while that's all, and while you wait, earplugs really aren't such a bad idea! :)

PS how are you finding it, in your new place? :)

I'll be moving Chim soon and she's probably going to have to adjust to not having a catflap anymore, and thus being outside during the day and inside at night. And she won't like that one bit. But we're hoping to at least get somewhere spacious where she has plenty of room to lurk. I guess we'll be keeping her in for a week or two at first.

One problem with not having a catflap (going from my place to somewhere rented with gsv) is going to be going away. At the mo I can ask a neighbour (and we'll have to make friends with some when we move!) to come in once a day and leave food for her. But if she can't go in and out, in theory I'd have to ask someone to come in twice a day to let her out then in. But that won't work, because she's incredibly timid and would just hide under something and not move when anyone except me or gsv comes in.

May just have to be catteries, then. :(

course it's alright... in our previous place they only came in at night and now in the new place the're finally out all day too, hail rain or snow. cats are survivers.

the rspca say you should provide indoor access at all times (even if it's only a shed or summat outdoor-ish).

rspca can say what they want... no harm has come to either of my cats in 5 years of being outside. they love it, even if I'm in the house with the back door open they still don't come in, unless I rattle their food box or it's tea time.

If they have a blanket or something that they kip on, that smells of them, then rubbing it about the new house, on the doors, furniture, carpets helps them feel more at home. Cats are very smell-orientated, that is why they rub their chins and cheeks on you and knead their paws; - they have scent glands there. They like to smell of you and have you smell of them. It makes them feel secure. That is why they make nests in your coat if you chuck your coat on the bed and climb onto piles of clean washing.

cats are great :) :) :) :)

(tony - was it you who used to refer to your cats on here as your 'furry ballet dancers'? now we have one, i see what you mean :D )

Yep... we have a book (can't remember the name) but it was mentioned in that and cracked me up. I'll post up the name of the book when I get home because it's a fantastic book... more like a fairytale book of cats, with some great pics etc.

You know what I love about cats, when they get startled and they just jump, from lying down, right up into the air with legs all spread out. never fails to amuse me.

Or, sitting on the sofa if I spot a spider, out of absolutely nowhere the cat springs into action and gobbles the spider.

Going back to the outside thing, all my family who have cats have always done the same & put the cats out, young and old etcetera without any problems, it's just something we've always done naturally.

sounds great! Photo enthusiastically devoured my guide to cat behaviour, now that he's a cat fan, so i'm looking to get him some more cat books for xmas

heh, ours does that - being a kitten-almost-a-cat, she's got tons of energy and is quite skittish so she jumps all over the place!

i love it when cats eat spiders; Photo couldn't believe it the first time tomasina did it - he told her it was nasty and she just gave him an 'oh yeah? whatcha gonna do about it?' kind of look :D

we've always had cat flaps so i've never heard of it tbh. cats are pretty adaptable tho.

that looks GREAT!
i might start a thread over in books'n'telly, if anyone's interested in following me over there ...

is it wise, cloo, shutting the cat outdoors all day?
Well, she's survived 4 weeks outside when she buggered off on me once, so I take it the best part of a day every day won't do her any harm. I will endeavour to provide some kind of shelter for her if there isn't a shed or obvious dry spot. My childhood cat would spend all his time outside too - he never had a catflap.

I'm not like wussy Americans who keep their mogs inside all the time 'in case they catch illnesses' (to which my reply is 'Children catch illnesses if we let them outside, but we don't keep them in all the time'). ;)

i know, the yanks are odd. having said that, tomasina is in all the time at the mo cos she's not been 'done' yet and her injections aren't complete. i will worry like crazy once she's allowed outside :o
