Quite possibly. I got some surprisingly good results with my 50mm f/1.8 before I traded up to a f/1.4. (if you can avoid the halation which mostly seemed to creep in below f/2.0 in bright conditions).
This one of my father from last year, for example. Plastic fifty, f/2.8, 1/80 sec @ ISO 800 on a 5D.

Well this does not hold a candle to all of the pictures in this thread. Taken on my trusty Nokia N73 last Saturday on my way to the shop at the end of my road for skins and munchies.
Added the cross processing effect in Paint Shop Pro and was taken at -1.5 exposure on my phone iirc.
People have always said I have an eye for a good shot, please let me know what you think
