chriswill are those cropped or full images? I ask because I haven't had a play with a proper macro lens yet, only with extension tubes and they are all over the place - at least how I use them.

Cropped but not drastically. I'll share an uncropped one when I'm back by the pc.

I'm using a sigma 105 which is 1:1 and spiders don't move around much so you can get in pretty close

It may say that it is 1:1 but those garden spiders above are way bigger than real life.

These are about as good as I could get using my extension tubes:

They're not all over the place!

I'm finding that good light is difficult to come by having to shoot at around f22

Plus, Sid the spider is actually a bit of a brute!
He's not small, I've jumped a couple of times when he's moved

There was a guy gave a talk about his insect photography. He used to capture insects in the wild, all sorts, bring them back into a home studio containing all sorts of plants and some lights. Then he would photograph them at his leisure before returning them. He had some cracking shots!
