It had been for sale / then adoption and if that didn't work s/he would have been returned to the breeder.
And probably would have ended up as food for something carnivorous or maybe breeding stock.
Pretty much. That and camouflage. Dart frogs come in a proper stunning array of colours but annoyingly spend a lot of time hiding under leaf litter at home, the rude twats.
