I regret working for other people. All I got was some money and some experience. Doing shit for somebody else isn't following your dream. It may be a cliche, but happiness is following your dream.
Well, I still 'work' for other people/companies, I just feel slightly more in control of my own destiny. I feel I can walk away if a job really fucks me off. In reality I've only actually done this once and the project crashed and got cancelled just after I'd quit.
Best decision I ever made was to go freelance. I've not actively looked for work for several years now and I only work with people that I genuinely like. I've just taken nearly a month off, too.
But it doesn't suit everyone, that's for sure.
I've been self-employed since 2001, but am not a sole trader - I'm in a partnership. Best of both worlds ime - get to (help) run the show but it's not as financially risky (I joined an established firm). Probably not much help if your industry isn't structured like that, but maybe worth thinking about collaborative working?
