See No Evil Hear No Evil Talk No Evil

Blimey

Dunno how involved you are, but we're putting together the next issue of Now or Never! (paper) at the moment and it might be cool to have a bit about this in there if you're up for it, if it's nowt to do with you and you were just posting an interesting link let me know and I'll get in touch with the Socialist Party

Hi, its probably best to contact the campaign directly - as much as we point out that this is an attack on the Socialist Party - it is ultimately on the left in the union as a whole - so it is being fought as a 'Left in Union v Right wing bureaucrats' thing rather than a 'Socialist Party v the bureaucracy' thing.

the email is [email protected] (PO Box 858, London E11 1YG)

tbh I don't what dennisr is on about- all I was saying was support the SP against the victimisation and lrt's build action in the unions to show hwta a bunch of reactionary lot the bureacracy is

what that's got to do with party lines is beyond me

sorry if i don't write in the exact style dennisr stipulates- I think the left needs to experiment more with its style tbh- though that post was written hurriedly as it happens

let's get voer the petty always attacking one another and start acting with solidarity

Now that's much better- practical, to the point:)

Wicked stuff, thanks

i will let you off this time ;) :)

(notice the smiley on both occasions - calm down dear ie i am joking with another individual on a bulletin board - you - just as i would in real life not 'attacking' anything...)

well Ok all is sweetness and light- i was feeling grouchy anyway.

but I do agree this should be fought- the attack on the left in Unison I mean :) ;)
there's a double smiley

I left the sp about 6 months ago.
Am going tobring it up at Unison, Unite, Oxford Trade council.
I can do something, but your probably better off contacting SP directly.

Onay Kasab - one of the 4 facing this disiplinary from the Unison bureaucracy is also one of the leaders of the recent victory in Greenwich against the single-status deal

Greenwich workers score victory against single status:
http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/3847

The article says:
"In addition, the branch agreed to make the call for: "Equal pay, not low pay", while demanding: "Not an hour on the day, nor a penny from our pay". These slogans gained a massive echo amongst the membership. The prolonged intensive and inclusive campaign, backed up by the threat of strike action, put the union branch in an excellent negotiating position. The council knew that the negotiators had the backing of thousands of workers. Negotiating from a position of strength is what led to the council making massive concessions. The proposals put to the membership in the ballot included:

* A reduction in the working week.
* No loss of pay.
* Pay increases for manual workers.
* An improved job evaluation system.
* Equal pay compensation.
* Improved overtime rates.

As a result of the campaign and the 'yes' vote, thousands of low-paid workers in Greenwich will now be compensated and receive better, improved rates of pay. The Unison branch secretary is a member of the Socialist Party. This victory shows how with the correct tactics and strategy, not only can workers fight off attacks but we can win real victories which lead to real improvements in pay for workers."

Ironic isn't - given they threatened Onay (Greenwich branch secretary) because he wrote an article on single status saying that his branch had voted to “reject any proposals that lead to a loss of a single penny from a single unison member”, telling him this was against union policy because “it may be necessary for some members to take a drop in pay to achieve equal pay”!!

there is a public meeting at Friends Meeting House at Euston. London, on Tuedsay April 15th at 7pm

There is a demonstartion to support those accused outside their hearing on Tuesday April 22nd outside the Holiday Inn, Regents Park, Carburton Street, London starting at 8.30a.m. ..

i would urge people to support this demo and campaign .. in my 20 years of union membership it is the worst and most dishonest attack on union activists i have seen, BY their own union

( ironic that the oh so cash-strapped union finds the money to hire a suite at the Holiday Inn for 3 days for this show trial )

Anti-racists protest at Unison witch hunt:
http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/4092

MAKHAN S BAJWA, director of Greenwich Council for Racial Equality (CRE) to Unison general secretary Dave Prentis, to protest about the treatment of Onay Kasab, Greenwich Unison branch secretary (see front page).

A similar letter was sent by Dev Burrah, coordinator of The Racist Attacks Monitoring Unit in Woolwich, who has been active in anti-racist groups for 30 years.

His letter says that Onay Kasab was part of Greenwich and Bexley Against Racism which organised 12 pickets of Bexley council's civic centre, demanding the closing down of the BNP HQ in Welling. He was also part of the committee that organised one of the biggest anti-racist, anti-BNP mobilisations in October 1993 where "65,000 people came to Greenwich to say no to racist attacks and racist murder."

Two years ago, Onay Kasab "was involved in a campaign 'empowering people to report racist crime' and mobilised for a public meeting which was attended by 385 people."

Dev Burrah's letter says Kas "is a true activist fighting racism and injustice and we have a lot of respect for him. I am appalled by the accusations."

Unison witch-hunt: Rory Bremner and Mark Thomas speak out:

"On the face of it, Unison are about to make themselves look a laughing stock. They need to be very aware of the widespread ridicule this will attract to their union and its leaders, and think again before the papers get hold of this and make them look foolish and authoritarian. They don't need this distraction". Rory Bremner

"I know Onay Kasab - Kas. I have had the privilege of working with him on the Ilisu Dam Campaign and on the issue of trade unionist deaths in Columbia. To accuse him of being racist is utter stupidity and madness ... those who brought this charge need to take a lie down in a quiet room, possibly with whale music playing and get a rest or they need to acknowledge their actions are motivated by other factors". Mark Thomas

from what i hear ( i was not able to attend ) a film crew got into the hotel and confronted a Unison official over how much the hire of this posh hotel costs .. i believe this was filmed and hopefully will be able to provide link soon! :D

.. still on going .. Glenn Kelly spoke for so long they have had to book up additional dates ( his pointy arm must be aching! :D)

Four years on.......

Unison leadership found guilty of “unjustifiable discipline” against four Socialist Party activists.

Once again, the Unison leadership has been found guilty of “unjustifiable” disciplinary action against four activists for producing a leaflet protesting about the exclusion of resolutions from the 2007 Unison conference.
Today an Employment Appeal Tribunal (Judge Michael Supperstone QC) upheld the unanimous judgment of an earlier Employment Tribunal (Employment Judge Ms H Grewal, 27 January 2011).
That ET judgment last year rejected false allegations of racism against the four and found that the real reason for disciplinary action was that they had issued a leaflet criticising the Standing Orders Committee and the union leadership of preventing discussion on issue of union democracy.
Today’s EAT rejects all five grounds on which the Unison leadership appealed against last year’s ET judgment.
The four activists who were disciplined by Unison were banned from holding any union office for up to three years. The four are Glenn Kelly (formerly Bromley branch secretary and NEC member), Onay Kasab (formerly Greenwich branch secretary), Brian Debus (formerly Hackney branch chairperson), and Suzanne Muna (formerly Housing Corporation branch secretary).
The judgments of the ET and the EAT completely vindicate the four’s struggle to defend union democracy. The unjustified sanctions against the four are part of a wider witch-hunt being carried out by the Unison leadership against activists fighting for union democracy and effective action to defend public services, jobs, pay and conditions. There is now a rising tide of discontent within the union at the ineffective policies of the leadership when faced with a tsunami of attacks on the public sector.
The Unison leadership unscrupulously tried to bolster their disciplinary charges with allegations of racism. This related to a cartoon on the leaflet protesting about the Standing Orders Committee’s suppression of over 50 resolutions that used the well-known image of three wise monkeys who see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil.
The ET judgment forcefully rejected the allegation of racism: “All four Claimants are committed anti-racists and have fought against racism. They quite reasonably assumed that anyone who saw the leaflet would understand the cartoon to be saying that the SOC was out of touch in closing its minds to and ignoring issues that concern the membership.”
“Looking at the context in which the cartoon was used (i.e. to depict the attitude of the SOC towards controversial motions) it cannot be said that any reasonable person would or should have realised that it would cause racial offence, and that not doing so was somehow ‘careless’. That is reinforced by the fact that [it] never occurred to many people who saw the cartoon before its publication. These individuals included an Equalities and Diversity officer and black members.”
Incredibly, during the case, it was discovered that Unison’s own lawyers had used a cartoon of the three wise monkeys.
The tribunal found that the main reason for disciplinary action against the four was that they produced a leaflet criticising the SOC for rejecting a large number of branch resolutions.
It is estimated that the Unison leadership must have spent at least £100,000 on the disciplinary hearings and tribunal cases. At a time when the focus should have been on fighting public-sector cuts, the four have been dragged through four years of tortuous, money-wasting investigations and hearings.
Glenn Kelly, one of the four, is demanding that the witchhunts must stop, and the four branches taken out of regional administration so that the members can run their branches. Also that the bans on the four should be rescinded and the latest charge against Glenn should be withdrawn.
Glenn urges UNISON to fight the Condem government instead of hard working union activists.

I thought I saw Onay Kasab at the N30 march in London acting as a UNITE steward or at least wearing a UNITE shirt. Does that mean that he has had to change unions?

yep - majority of his branch went with him. The key problem he faced - as a result of this witchhunt is that his branch was fighting serious battles n the ground alongside his members at the same time as being stabbed in the back. He had no choice but to move on so as not to be hamstrung by the union bureaucrats of Unison. Suzanne faced the same situation and is now in Unite.

Glenn and Brian are in a position where they are able to do the practical day-to-day work of the branches they are in without 'official' positions - so still in Unison

This bit is particularly galling. Given how some fairweather "leftwing" "friends" actually had the gall to ask these folk to apologise before they could offer their "unqualified support".

Given - Suzanne is Iranian background. Onay is Cypriot background and a founder member of GARCA (sp?). Brian is reknowned as a one-man army in Hackney - fighting un-sexy individual asylum cases for over two decades (the one's involving years of dreary and unrecognised day-in day-out work - being there when families need - fighting the isolation and silence - not resolutions passed at conferences). All of them have a long-history of ACTUALLY fighting racim and fascism.

That £100,000 they spent paying lawyers to defend the indefensable - that was £100,000 of membership subs - wasted on this dirty campaign
