The 60s certainly had some heavy duty members amongst the 'hard mod' gangs. This was very prominent scene in London. Many of these geezers became first wave skins.

Actually, I could think of more than a few mods who would quite easily have pummelled you into a whimpering, simpering crybaby at the time, not that it has any relevance or significance to the subject.
No, but it's a lovely thought :D

Gary Bushell?

He was a Mod for about five minutes iirc. And he certainly said he was hard.

It's still a pretty paltry showing though. No wonder the rockers kicked their asses.

Do you never get tired of displaying your ignorance?

Never that keen on them really. Of all those '79 Mod bands, Back To Zero were the only one I liked.

There were some shockers too, The Merton Parkas spring straight to mind. :D

The three tracks by 'The Mods' on Mod' Mayday 79 are all cracking, high energy, pill popping stompers! I owuld have liked to have been there for them - they sound like they are having a fucking ball!

They were a bit of a snotty bunch actually. We got on with the Small Hours best at the time.

Hoxton Tom was a suedehead.

True, but I mentioned him because he was around at the time of the mod revival, was involved in it, and featured on Secret Affair's album cover (-which ties rather neatly in with what this thread was originally about! ;)).

(-Interesting bloke, though admittedly I don't know that much about him. -I remember when The 4-Skins were around though, seeing their picture and thinking what a distinct mix of different politics and styles there seemed to be within one band. He always looked the most sharp too! If there's a book about him, I'd be keen to read it.)

His son appeard in the BBC series street style when they had the episode that included skinheads.

Must've missed that; wish I'd seen it.

Toms politics, even whilst the The 4 SKins, was liberal/leftish community politics.

I'm sure you can get it on Torrent sites to download. Was a not bad wee programme.

Yeah, I suppose that's what I was hinting at; the apparent mix within one band seemed/seems quite unusual (-? AFAIK).

Alas, I'm not up on The Dark Arts. :o Maybe it's on You Tube though... :hmm:

I dunno much about the politics of the other members of The 4 Skins but some fans had fash connections and Paul Swain ended up in Skrewdriver.

Dunno if there's a book on him but the wiki page on him has some good links.

The manager of Roi Pearce line up was C18 i think too

theres a whole new batch of bands that don't admit to anything dodgy, just have toned down lyrics. Thankfully very few of em have music that interests me.

Last Resort are playing at my local in a few monthsmdoes anyone know what thier politics are "really like:hmm:

i don't think there'll be many Guardian readers there. The new CD is really good, but they can't help the odd "String em all up by the balls"

i saw em at Blackpool and they were excellent, Roi Pearce was jumping around all over the place. Quite a few dodge there but it never kicks off , though i can't say if it won't at your place (is this the Purleet tavern or summat?)

You'll get all sorts at their gigs, mates of mine go and none of them are politically minded or right-wing let alone fascists. Be surprised of there's no dodgy cunts there though.

Yeah i know a few mates wholl be there just for the piss up and a boogy,mi self included, just wondering how many dodgy types will be lurking aswell, hopefully have an "after party"for em;)

The mod revival started in 1978 which would have made him just 15. So you are wrong once again.

No, I am rıght. Fıfteen was about the average age at Mod gıgs as I recall.

Anyway, ıt started ın 1979.

What mod gigs did you go to in 1978, phil?

The Jam. Not hard at all. Nor was anyone ın the audıence.

I'm sorry but I thınk your memory ıs at fault here.

Editor, to be in a "band" during the "Mod Revival" would mean you would, at the least, hav to be in your late 40's? You'v always appear mor juvenile than that, much mor. Most Lefties, nay, people in general, I know, hav grown up at least a bit, they had children, got married, life in general has made them grow-up, but you hav remain'd a permanent juvenile.

No call for that.

It remaıns true however that the Mods were basıcally a bunch of softıes. Certaınly compared to the rockers.

I mean, who do you thınk would wın ın a fıght: Lemmy out of Motorhead or Ian Page out of so-called ''Secret Affaır?''

The answer ıf obvıous: Ian Page. Because I have seen Lemmy ın a bar ın LA, and he ıs approxımately 4ft 11. Serıously, the dude ıs a shrımp.

I seem to have undermıned my own argument a bıt there. Hang on a second...

OK, who do you thınk would wın ın a fıght: Phılthy Anımal Taylor out of Motorhead or Seb Shelton out of so-called ''Secret Affaır?''

The answer ıs obvıous: Phılthy Anımal Taylor would tear Seb Shelton's bollocks off wıth hıs teeth.

Am I rıght or wrong?

Therefore we see that the Mods were ındeed a bunch of softıes, certaınly compared to the rockers.

QEfuckıngD.

phildwyer's recollection of them days was pretty much mine. It was all 15 years olds, a minor off-shoot of Punk, and as I said, for boys who didn't hav the guts to be Punks, easy to adopt, buy a green Parka and some white socks and you wer away. It took-off/started in summer 1978, morph'd into Rude Boy in '79 and went Skinhead in 1980.

Yep. In my school the so-called Mods used to get theır dınner money stolen every day.

By the dınner ladıes.
