Wait a mo - sleepers are sedatives surely? Hypnotics are, well, hypnotics. Lots of drugs combine both effects (benzos spring to mind), but it's not the same thing.

Benzos ultimately have the same effect - increasing GABA - but the speed/duration determines the indication. Hence short(er) acting benzos - for example temazepam - are used as hyponotics, and longer acting benzos - for example diazepam - are used as anxiolytics.

And sleepers are hypnotics - the two terms are synonymous.

Fair enough then; I wasn't entirely sure. I am wrong sometimes - very, very occasionally. I recall one time in 1983. ;)

ETA: I know it's not exactly an authority, but wikipedia draws a distinction between the 2 effects... :hmm:
