School tie/shirt trauma

If that's true, I'll eat my old school tie.

Oh that'll probably be true alright, my son (12yrs) has been at upper school a year now and they have shit loads of homework right from the start !

Count yourself lucky SS, my son's school is uber strict on uniform, no untucked shirts, blazers to be worn at all times unless told by the teacher that they can be taken off (if taken off without teachers say so,eg if its hot, said kid has to keep it on all the time !)Hoodies are not allowed even as outerwear (like a coat), long hair not allowed, shaved heads not allowed.......i could go on !

Bit lilke my school but en masse rule breaking soon got around that... no chance of them bothering with 100 plus students into detention or whatever.

Plus - back to those coats innit ;)

Shirt untucked, short tie with fat knot.. fashion has changed in the last 20 years. In my day it was white button down Ben Sherman, long tie with the thin end showing. But then again us mods/casuals had class, taste & style, which is sadly missing from todays school kids..

Only the back bit, the bit that gets tucked in the shirt!
Pig doesn't understand that at this age image is important. He probably looked like a prick when he was at school. ;)

FFS it's only a KID (all of 5??)

Since when has image mattered one iota to a kid of five? It's more important to the wannabe parents!

LOL! Yes, he's 11, 12 next month..and don't we all know how important image is, especially when surounded by females all day! ;)

Oh god, I've got this tomorrow!

Only my problem will be socks! He always wears odd ones  and the uniform list says black socks to be worn so I don't know if they will accept one red and one green? :D

And my daughter informed me today that she has grown out of her coat and needs a new one but I havn't got any money to buy her one

Oh, and they need 16 pounds for locker keys tomorrow as well!

Not a happy mum at the moment! :(

Thats odd, my son has just turned 12 (august 10th) but has been at upper school for a year already ?

It depends on when birthdays are. Eg, mine is August 28th and I just made it into the year group I was in by three days; thus, people who were a few days younger than me were a whole year below me academically, whereas people who were nearly a year older were in the same year group.

Um hello? Since when was going to school dressed like your friends rebelling, you bunch of neeks. He'll find a way to rebel, trust me. Stobart was merely making sure he didn't get laughed at.
I never cut my tie though, I just put the long end through the hole in my shirt

I caused my school uniform rules to be re-written. :D
I managed nearly a term of arguing that my fishnets were black tights before they added not fishnets to the rules and not Dr Marten boots to the black sensible shoe rule.
I thought DMs were pretty sensible tbh.

 :D

Well, something of an odd legacy.

Did you ever get that Canadian thing (tagline) verified?

Well I'll be interested to hear what the school has to say about my daughter's lip piercing today. The rules are - no eyebrow/navel/nose piercings, and one stud in each ear - nothing about lips :D But it will be very interesting to see how fast that rule is made compared to how fast they put the homophobic bullying policy into place - the one that was hard fought by us with the LEA and the school and which was promised to be in place by the start of this term.

I still feel ill after two days of secondary

Oh well, he's been in school for over 2 hours now and I am still wondering if he's ok. Only seems like a few years ago he was starting in reception, how the time flies!
Took a pic of him standing by the front door before he left, seems so grown up in his tie and shirt. Might try to post it up later if I can work out how to do it.

I know how this feels my boy started new school on Monday, there are rules about the bloody tie (can't have more than eight and less than six stripes showing-or something..), he's a nervous wreck about timetables homework and dinner money. i have had to let him loose on trains. I wonder does anyone know if there is technology where I can chip him and observe him at all times via satellite links? Obviously just for a couple of years nothing excessive.
I am trying to get a grip but I feel like I've sacrificed my first born.

I remember my slide into secondary school being quite straightforward.

Maybe I was just stupidly oblivious to the change... hmm...

it's rebelling against the way the schools would prefer the kids to look, it's adding a bit of the kids own personality to the school uniform. and we've all been to school you know, just cos you're young it doesn't mean you know it all :p

I must admit I felt a bit like that on Monday, seeing him all done up in his short and tie, they seem so grown up but they are the little fishes in the big pond again.
I just wish he would stop spending loads of money on drinks and food at school, it's costing us a fortune! :(

why not just give him less money per day and instil in him that it has to last all day or else he's going to go hungry? you could always send him to school with a bottle of squash and a couple of apples? :p ;)

I think it's awful that sending them back to school after the summer break. I mean it takes me a couple of weeks to get into the summer holidays, but once I relax, it is just great to have all my children around me.
My big kids are in years 10 and 8 now, and I know that summers like the one we've just had, are precious and all too soon they'll be off on there own adventures, and I'm going to miss them so much.
I was swelling with pride as I said goodbye to my eldest yesterday. It was his first day in the upper school, I had to buy him a new blazer this year, he's grown so much, voice has broken, etc. Proud, but it's kind of bitter sweet.

Anyway, about the tie. I am totally with Stobart. Kids want to blend in, not stand out as any sort of 'neek' (love that word)

No kid in my year group (7) is wearing their tie short, and if it's not lengthened, I'll send them home.

I've sent none home yet.

I wish he would stop giving his change to the salvation army who collect at the train station (chugging -charity mugging) I've told him we will be eating with the salvation army by the end of the month.

I freaked out on Wednesday as masterdarkone was late home and his phone was switched off..... I called the school who didnt know if they had seen him that day!!! and then I called the bus company who were engaged, so I wnet ot get on the car to look for him and the he appeared, I was crying by this time :o

Oh well I bollocked him about forgetting to charge his phone up... and lopped 10 mins of his bed time and barred him from the pc for the rest of the week......

The point I tried to get across to him that if he does everything when he gets home, and remembers to turn his phone off so it dosent run out of juice then it will all be much better... he gets on the pc and he forgets everything (sound familiar) I think he understands that its stressful for me as well letting him out in the big wide world. Anyway he seems to have got the jist now, the sanactions seem to nip it in the bud pretty sharpish :D
