Scarlett Johansson does Tom Waits.

Neither would I. And that's why I haven't made such a claim.
So, what was this:

the difference is trifling little things like he wrote some of the songs, was doing something genuinely new and challenging, he plays on the albums, he wrote his own lyrics

Maybe Scarlett has a "passion and commitment" to signing?

So, what was this:
As highly selective quoting goes, that was positively Olympian - I note that you even took off the qualifying word "Perhaps" at the beginning of my sentence for extra twisty effect.

So I'll leave you to it because I can't be arsed with this kind of stuff.

Are you off to have a guilty tug over some pics of Scarlet in her knickers?
She doesn't do it for me, but feel free to smudge your undies over her if you want.

But there's no need to post up here about it after, thanks.

*gets wafting again

Don't be silly. The omission of the "perhaps" was entirely accidental. If you think the "perhaps" makes all the difference in the context, then you are entitled to ensure the record is duly corrected. With or without that "perhaps", however, my puzzlement remains.

You are of course entitled not to like Ms Johansson's work. I am inclined to believe it is your Puritanical streak of believing actresses who have done "soft porn" shoots are incapable of artistic merit which led you to your comments.

Myself, I was unaware of her soft porn work, having only seen her films.

*Gazes in awe at danny la rouge's outstanding skills at wilful misrepresentation and heads to the pub.

For the record here's what I actually said (in response to you comparing the work of Mick Jones to Johansson):

"The fact that his career profile hadn't been hiked by posing for titillating soft porn pictures might be seen as a plus in the credibility stakes for some too."

Plenty of musicians - including Joe Strummer, and, to a much greater extent, Tom Waits - have branched out into doing film roles, speaking out lines written by somebody else for the camera, why is it a big deal when an actor tries singing?

Yes, if you like.

However, as I suspect anyone who actually reads the thread will see, I wasn't comparing "work of Mick Jones to Johansson". I was comparing your views on her socio-economic background to your views on my quip about Jones' socio-economic background. So perhaps you should be a bit less selective yourself.

She hasn't got her tits or anything else out as far as I'm aware - she's just done a few magazine covers - maybe this is what editor deems to be porn - he'll be covering up table legs and murdering prostitutes next

Ah right, the Vogue cover etc. Yes, I saw that story in the press (Times, I think), although I don't read Vogue myself.

Besides the fact that I think it's crap, the real point is that she's being heralded as some new indie queen. Establishment backing for a Hollywood star isn't really indie, or independent in anyway.

Nothing to do with looks, or talent.

Indeed, although it's a long time since "indie" has been anything other than a genre. Major label "indie" music is, sadly, nothing new.

Yep. This is my main objection.

The cover of Tom Wait's original 'Falling Down' has been turned into a standard, indie genré durge. It's pleasant enough and Scarlett looks as hot as ever IMO, but the Lo-Fi cool video and unchallenging, nothing new, drone of her voice is just like an homogonised, safe to play fucking bore. The musical production is just to Mazzy Star/90's glumness slick. She's stealing an image and sound. She's a good enough actress to play the role and no doubt it will become a million selling cool, 'indie' album and she will become an instant icon of indie. Stolen it all from the kids. It's crap really, but the kids will come up with something new. I suspect most of the buyers of the Scarlett album will be at least 30 anyway.

It's not what made Tom Wait's the unique star that he is. Original:

Thanks for that. It's my first hearing. You're right, it's rubbish. Ersatz lo fi, and transparently cynically so. It's a shame, because she actually sounds like she has quite an interesting voice, if she could find something original to do with it.

Oh, and Firky, much appreciated, but it's quite OK, I think the thread speaks for itself. :D

Yes that's right, punk is dead
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters
CBS promote the Clash
Ain't for revolution, it's just for cash
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
Ain't got a thing to do with your or me

Crass.

I met Mick Jones he was buying coffee as was I, and I smiled at him and gave a knowing nod, he nodded back and smiled. Few minutes later he came past as he was leaving and said 'thanks'.

I still don't know if he was saying thanks for not making a fuss, recognising him or being a fan. I suspect it was for not making a fuss.

He seems a genuine and sound guy. (Lest anyone misunderstand the point I was making).

Nice story. I shared a coffee with someone quite rock famous recently. I didn't recognise him and then discovered he was one of my best mates all time guitar heroes.

What uninformed toss.

a) it's not really being flogged as an indie album
b) i doubt it'll do that well and I'm pretty damn sure the project isn't driven by financial concerns
c) Last time I checked, Scarlett Johansson is in her early 20s, making her one of the kids you claim she's trying to rip off.

There's a lot of unmitigated wank being spouted on this thread, but as usual, Stanley, yours is the wankiest.
