Scariest boxer of all time

I'd probably say Tyson in his day as well. Although you can't completely discount Rocky Marciano, one of only two heavyweight world champions to beat every man he ever boxed (the other one is Lennox Lewis).

He was a fucking savage, learned to fight as a teenage hobo.

The fight where he wins the title from Willard is one of the most ferocious attacking displays I've ever seen, Willard would claim that Dempsey had a bolt clutched in his glove during the fight.

Anyone see what he did to Primo Carnera? Carnera was a giant (for the time) 6 7 and about 19 stone. Dempsey was about 6.1 and was giving away about 5 stone advantage. It was genuinly savage. Dempsey was ferocious.

Following on from the 'Greatest boxer of all time' thread, here's something else to choose from.

I'm not talking about technical skill, or toughness, or raw talent, but about those fighters who managed to instil abject terror in the hearts of their opponents.

Who had the reputation that gave them an instant psychological edge over the opposition.

My pick for scariest boxer of all time?

Thomas 'Hitman' Hearns.

Hearns was a maniac. A legendary finisher who (with very few notable exceptions) could simply hammer into submission any fighter put in front of him.

It wasn't that he didn't have the technical skills, and had to rely on aggression. He was, by all accounts, a very gifted technical fighter He wouldn't have lasted long at the Kronk gym if he hadn't had natural ability. He just had such incredible brute force that most of his opponents crumbled in a couple of rounds. Roberto Duran for one.

So who's your pick for scariest boxer of all time?

Rumour had it that after fighting Hagler no one was ever quite the same afterwards. Remember when he won the title against Alan ('I'll never lose my title to a black man') Minter at Wembley it only lasted three rounds and Minter needed 46 micro stitches in his mush. His demolition of Hearns was equally spectacular 3 rounder. Hearns actually tried to run away!

For me it was either Tyson, or Big George when in his early 20's prior to being rumbled by Ali.

But there's a lot which can be mentioned.

One thing I must add tho' is this talk about how Hearns was annihilated by Hagler in 3, and that he ran away.

Hearns matched him all the way in that fight, and I know Bernie will agree the 1st round of that fight is probably the best of all time. Hearns broke his hand and had to get on his bike and box but with Haglers relentless pressure he had to back up, but he boxed/boxes beautifully on the back foot. If he hadn't of broken his hand I believe he'd have taken Hagler out in the 2nd cos he had a lot more power.
