Say something nice about Americans

I doubt that. Have you met every culture in the world? Probably not, so you speak in ignorance and such "in the whole world" sayings are ultimately meaningless. Maybe you found them all open friendly and good-humoured, but you're a certain type of person with a certain accent. All that can really be said is that you got on with the ones you met.

serious, boring answer

November - the thread is about saying nice things about America.

If you have nothing nice to say, then don't.

If you feel what you are saying is important, start another thread and invite people to trash the Americans.

I've said nice things about the little fellas. But I insist the nice things that others say about them are meaningful nice things, not just empty worthless platitudes or whatever.

OK I will say something nice....

American drivers (those in the American south) are actually quite a bit more polite than Australian drivers (at least those in QLD).

They manage to combine the sexual perversity of the Germans with the racism of the South Africans without the drawbacks of organisational efficiency or sporting competence.

The first government of the people, by the people, and for the people. The first constitutional democracy which unleashed tremendous human energy and ingenuity creating a standard of living, of freedom and liberty, of influence and hope unequaled in the history of the world. - paraphrased from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

The first government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

If "the people" means a tiny clique of white male planters, slaveholders, bankers, merchants, creditors and manufacturers then yep.

The first constitutional democracy which unleashed tremendous human energy and ingenuity

...and slavery, genocide, lynching and imperialism...

creating a standard of living, of freedom and liberty

... except for the majority of the population - the rural poor, the American Indians, black and asian slaves, indentured servants, women and children. They kinda got written out of the American dream didn't they?

Which proves they were still holding onto the ways of the old world's ideas of egalitarianism. Still, it was a start even though they proved they couldn't live up to it.

They are the only group you can freely abuse in nationalist terms (yank, etc.) without fear of censure on U75.

And they gave us Brock Lesnar.

The US is a big place, and can't you get into Canada/Mexico with an official ID card, a little like Europeans can in the EU?

Not quite the same as us not having a passport.

The Canada and Mexico thing is coming to an end now, but until very recently you could go there, and also to many countries in the Caribbean, without a passport. And as you say, America is a continent in itself, and Americans travel very widely within it.

Although it is true that when I was burgled and thought my passport had been nicked, the investigating policeman had never even heard of a passport.

yes, but what is popular with you isn't necessarily popular with me.

Well you mentioned be-bop. And surely you have a soft spot for some jazz, blues, rock'n'roll, psychedelia, punk, rap or house, all of which are quintessentially American forms. And that's just music.
