Onket said:I also missed the first episode, and couldn't find it on replay (or whatever it's called), did enjoy the second a lot though. And I think I actually enjoy it more than the Partridge stuff. Probably cos I see a lot more of myself in Saxondale.![]()
that's the character. That's what he does; I like the depth of effort involved. I hope the series improves because season 1 was superb. Though I'm glad we see more of Vicky, eh babes?madzone said:There's too much 'mugging' - he needs to calm down a bit. I find it really gets in the way and otherwise I'd really enjoy it.

Pulling faces. All that smacking of lips and rolling his eyes after everything he says. It's like watching a pantomime dame. It's a shame becasue otherwise I really like it. He just needs to tone it down a bit.Onket said:What do you mean by 'mugging'?
Sunspots said:Yeah, I think those group therapy scenes are always really hilarious. Struggling to contain his anger issues in the face of what he sees as idiotic provocation.![]()
I hope Matt Berry's going to be in a few more episodes. He does 'smug' like no other.

The actor Todd Rivers is a genius.ATOMIC SUPLEX said:Wow I never realised he was so popular, no wonder I don't see him so much these days. I will never forget him doing a wank all over this girls bed to avenge a friend. What a gent.
i don't get how you can't see it's intentional. If you don't dig it then fine, but that is how the character is intended to be. Those mannerism are supposed to be somewhat cringeworthy. It's why he's such a great character.madzone said:![]()
He's not real you know
The actor creates the character. He's overacting that particular aspect of the character.

And they are all real. In my head.

goldenecitrone said:But if he's not real then what is the character if not the 'overacting' of it? Are you saying that the real character would not act in such a way?
madzone said:I'm saying that no-one in real life pulls that many faces all the time unless they have tourettes.

"I've stood in Dean's front room and watched him make a lotta love"
goldenecitrone said:But it's not real life. It's a character in a tv show. And a comedy tv show at that. Have you watched the League of Gentlemen? What do you think of their overacting?
Saxondale is supposed to be based on a certain type of real life person so giving him a character trait that is totally and unrealistically over the top doesn't work. It's distracting.
