Sauerkraut

So I have some ingredients ready and a recipe.
I work with a polish woman and she helped me out with the language and ingredients and wrote out the "prescription"...as she called it.
She says there are a couple more ingredients which she will get..I'm really very grateful to her. I only asked her about it so that I could get the correct name and head to the polish shop myself. But she went and got the ingredients.
So when all the necessary bits are ready I'll be making my own...
She gave me a bag of shredded cabbage that looks like it's already sauerkraut and a bag of mixed seasoning.. no idea what but looking forward to the final result.
:)

Polish saurkraut with cabbage and carrot for sale at the big Sainsbury's near me. Bloody whopping big jar for 80p!

I prefer the Bavarian brand though cos it's more vinegary and less salty. Plan on trying to make some myself soon, actually. Is it hard?

Hi. I’d suggest carroway, rather than cumin, if you need to add aromatics.
I eat ready-made sauerkraut with bratwurst/ franks or other smoked meat, maybe with some rye bread or plain (salted) boiled potatoes, bit mayonnaise and/ or a pickled cuc.
To my palate it doesn’t go so well with ‘english’ bangers sausages.

I got some in a bag in a middle eastern shop, thought it might be nicer than jar, it's not but I've been having it on the side of baked potatoes, mixing it up with the skin once I've eaten the inside and it's really nice this way. A+ would eat again.

I find myself eating this quite a lot, about half a jar a day. Is there anything I can with it other than eat out of the jar?

Struggling to find a source for it locally though except for sainsburys, shops here don’t tend to have a world food aisle. Ideally I’d be buying from a European supermarket which would perhaps be cheaper and might have more interesting varieties.

Worth checking what suppliers can deliver.

I’m not eating bread at the moment. Sausages could work

Definitely - get some decent sausages of some sort - German, Polish, English, or spicy ones of some description, all would work well - and serve on sauerkraut, I'd also go for boiled or mashed spuds and mustard with that (or mustard mash!)
I've actually got some nice Cumberlands in at the moment, I might go and eye up the extensive pickled goods aisles of our local shop (all sorts of East European and Turkish supplies!) when OH gets paid to find a decent jar of sauerkraut to have with some of them.

I am mainly eating chicken sausages and sauerkraut tbh. No carbs if I can help it so no spuds.

No such choice of pickled goods anywhere around here. I get envious when I see the pickles gentlegreen has

No reason why chicken sausages wouldn't work!
You might be able to find a supplier who can deliver, there'd probably be a minimum order value but stuff in jars lasts forever.
Or come to London for an urban meetup and I'll get you a couple of jars of interesting pickles from what I refer to as The Wall of Pickles in the shop I referred to above :D (No I am not above bribing people to come to urb events :D )

"Polish" shops are really handy.
The price has gone up now - averaging £2.24 a jar for my last shop and I'll easily shovel half a jar on my dinner
I haven't persevered with sauerkraut though - in spite of my love for all things cruciferous....and I only like Dijon mustard (Aldi since I can't get Grey Poupon).

Where are you? I thought everywhere had little polish shops these days.

Is it possible you like cabbage? I often just cook up a load of shredded cabbage leaves for breakfast lunch or dinner with added flavours (chilli, garlic, sesame oil etc). I love sauerkraut, but I love boiled, fried and raw (sweetheart) cabbage even more. Goes with everything.
