Sarah Palin named as McCain's VP

Right. Obama people are complaining about her lack of foreign policy experience? Whatever.

erm, that appears to be President Laura roslin of the 12 Colonies of Kobol

Interesting choice. Could prove to be a smart one as well. It might have the effect of reducing concerns about McCain's age, and might tempt hardcore Hillaryistas into voting Republican .... perhaps?

Ironic that a country so insular should worry about foreign policy experience.

Perhaps your perception need adjusting.

Since passports have starting being required, the percentage of people with them has gone up dramatically.

Besides, its not ironic at all. Almost all foreign policy is channelled through the executive.

Where else would it be channelled?

"Foreign policy experience" appears in any case to be a euphemism for "ability to run wars abroad". I doubt people are thinking of skill in negotiating trade treaties.

And the US in general is very insular. A very large number of people there take it as read that the US is the greatest country in the world and have very little interest in anywhere else, which must be by definition not as good.

Clever choice in the short term because now everyone is talking about this instead of Obama's speech last night...whether this will pan out in Baby Bush McCain's favour is another story...

You're missing the point. The voters are paying attention because foreign policy is relevant to the position.

BTW, I don't know anyone from any country who doesn't think their country is the best. The Brits are usually so entirely sure of this that they don't feel the need to say so.

I say again, that perhaps it's your perception that need adjusting.

I think it'll last longer. The election isn't that far off and now everything will be about 'woman president - can she do it?'. There's no better way to own the media attention.

Well picking her has definitely made things more interesting but ultimately it's a bad choice for McCain, it essentially destroys his 'experience' agenda and Palin will alienate more Hillary supporters than she will win over due to her views on abortion, she and McCain are both pro life and McCain has made comments about trying to overturn Roe Vs Wade. I sincerely hope the women who are still unsure about voting for Obama because Hillary failed to get the nomination will recognise this as a cynical ploy to win votes purely based on Palins gender.

Nah. I lived in the US for 2 years. The absolute belief of a great many Americans in the greatness of their country is different from Britain or anywhere else I've been.

I also lived in Cuba for a year. Most Cubans are very proud of being Cuban, but this is different from thinking that Cuba is the best country on Earth.

And I know Belgium quite well. It is a part of Belgium's understated charm that not a single Belgian believes that their country is the best at anything.

What, by highlighting the fact that the Republican candidate aint the youngest or healthiest of men? :D

I know nothing about Vice President Sarah Palin. What kind of person is she? Is she nice? You know this has to ruffle the feathers of people like Hillary and Pelosi to think that this nobody might be vp. :hmm:

A quick dig around via google seems to suggest that she's a strong anti-abortion advocate, which I suspect isn't going to win over many pro-Hilary female voters who aren't so sure about Obama.
