I saw an intriguing report on this, which made me look for more information on the internet(s).

As far as I know they don't have to energise heavy industry, but I htink that if a whole island can do this, it should be possible to export this to anywhere.
In my view this technology and experience could be - especially - very useful for regions or communities in the developping world.

Samsø as an example for the rest of the world
The green project on Samsø encourages many people to come to the island to learn about renewable energy. Samsø also learns from them and international cooperation is a good way to exchange knowledge. Together with three other islands Samsø had an agreement for a period of time to work together on the green energy project.
"People from abroad come to Samsø because they hope to get inspired by seeing the green project on this island," said Søren Hermansen, manager of the Samsø Energy and Environment Office about Samsø being an example for other islands that would like to work with renewable energy. In 2000 the Danish island received an Award for the best renewable energy island in Europe.
Samsø, located in the heart of Denmark with a population of 4.400, won a competition In 1997 to become a 100 percent renewable energy island within 10 years. The following year, the project was introduced on the island. Local involvement plays an important part in the project. The project includes many facets like district heating, solar heating and wind turbines.
