Ryanair...never again

ahhh ryan air

time to roll out my anecdote of seeing mr o'leary bumped from an air France flight. i laughed my tits off

I'm quite happy with Ryanair's hidden charges at the moment as it's prevented b/f's niece coming over this week for 5 days and the flights were only £2.99. She's decided she can't afford it after looking at all the charges. :D

For many though there is no option but to fly Ryanair. From the west of Ireland to say Gatwick, try and do that in a reasonable amount of time and not spend a fortune.
What annoys me about Ryanair is that they tack on these prices at the end rather than include it in the price, I could live with the cost if they were more expensive. And despite his comments to the contrary a lot of his charges are unavoidable such as claiming you can use electron cards to not pay the charges when in Ireland there arent any banks that issue the cards!

We're moving about. I suppose we could get someone to post them to one of the hotels we're staying in towards the end of the trip. But then if it doesn't turn up, you're potentially a bit stuck.

I'm sure we'll be able to get the things printed somewhere during the trip - I'm sure we can sweet-talk one of the hotels into doing it for us. But it's just more than a little irksome that this is the only option and they charge us £10 for it. Fuckers
Post a copy to each of the last hotels you're staying in.

Or just print one off over there, many places have a guest pc and printer for exactly this, but chances are they will rip you off on charges ;) A local internet cafe would probably be cheaper.

It is galling that Ryanair charge you for online checkin, but to to be fair to O'Leary he's staying true to his vision of "You can treat your passengers (and staff!!) with utter contempt as long as they are willing to accept it."

And if we went the train/ferry route, you still have to get from Dublin.

Dublin to Bird Hill (about 1/2 hour from Killaloe) takes around 4 hours by bus.

Dublin to Limerick obviously doesn't take as long on the train but costs around 50 Euros ONE WAY, but then you've got to get from Limerick to Clare

It's just £29 each way too for London - Dublin by train/ferry.

We did that this year, for exactly that price, planning to take our bikes. In the end we couldn't because they were doing engineering works (quelle surprise!) and so instead of a direct train from London to Holyhead we had to make 4 changes doing a grand tour of southern and central England train stations using a variety of companies - who, wouldn't let us make bike reservations, or guarantee we'd be able to take our bikes on each leg. So, rather than risk having to abandon our bikes in Birmingham/Reading/Chester or some other such place, we had to leave them behind. :(

It was still a good deal though. We hired bikes there instead.

but were you just going to Dublin or further?

Both. My family live in Dublin but we then went on to Cork (where my mum is from originally for a bit of a nostalgic look around with her) and did a bit of a bike tour around there. It's not a regular thing for us - it's far too expensive a country to spend more than 5 minutes in, even with family to stay with..!!:D Mum and my brother go regularly and tend to either fly or drive (if it's for a long trip).

Plus I'll always take the non-flying option if possible - even if it's more expensive.

I am not sure what people expect when they try to buy a 'free' flight....then get charged and fucked about

Cheapy airlines are blatently shit and it's all anyone ever says about them. A free flights costs money? What a surprise!

Yeah, it's outrageously expensive now with the pound so week. :D

Cork's nearer to Dublin than Clare is so that's lucky for you ;)

I've told niece that a 1p flight will be much more expensive than a £10 flight with no taxes :D

But Easyjet are good I think. I've travelled with them loads - around 15-20 flights I would think - and they are really good value for money.

It's managing your own expectations innit, like an adult.

1p flight! No, it's not a 1p flight - it's an advertisment and you have fallen for it? Wtf?

Well yeah. It's like those 'friends' who forward on spam e-mails because they think if they send it to 10 people they'll get an ipod, or something. Look guys, if it looks too good to be true, there's a reason for that...

Zactly.

Now tell me: how much did it cost you to get in that warm sea?

I've never used Queasyjet and I've heard mixed reports about them, but they've got to be better than Ryanair...

Ah, now that was in Samos which you can only get to with charter flights, and they aren't cheap! However, my lovely apartment with two balconies (count 'em - two!) was only 30 euros a night, so it's swings and roundabouts innit.

Believe it or not, my Mum's the worst culprit for forwarding them on :mad:

They're alright. I've only ever had one delay of an hour in all the times I've used them, they've never lost my bags, the flights have been fine... and they were cheap. £80 all in to places like Madrid or Athens. Can't complain.

I remember little piles of sand on indoor tiles I WANT A HOLIDAY :mad::mad:

If you can, get yourself a cheap flight to Athens in October. Then get the 3 euro bus down to the port where you can catch a boat to Agistri (one hour away and about 12 euros). Stay here for 38 euros a night: http://www.rosyslittlevillage.com

It's just as lovely as it looks. I've plugged it on a few threads because it's so gorgeous. It'll still be warm enough to swim, and they have bikes, kayaks, and a little sailing boat you can use for free. This is the view from their terrace:

I never expect the flights are going to be 1p or anything like that. What is so annoying is not knowing how much they're *actually* going to cost without going 95% of the way through the booking process - every step they throw in another charge. So it's really difficult to compare.

Easyjet are fine in my experience - yep it's no frills, but it's much more like a reasonable trade off - and the notion of choice still seems to exist - if you want extra convenience, it's there if you want to pay for it.

Whereas Ryanair seem to have removed most of the elements of choice - it's stripped-down service or nothing.

Sat here weighing individual items of clothing now to try to calculate how much I can take with me.

remember to weigh your bag :D

Personally, unless you're going somewhere cold, I don't know why people need a huge bag.

Whenever I've gone to Malaysia for 3 weeks, my bag's normally under 15kg

Yeah the bag is about 5kg - that's a third of my flippin' allowance right there!

We can take another 10kg as carry-on so between the two it should be do-able - also measuring my rucksacks to see which ones are within the dimensions for hand luggage. Faff faff faff.

We're covering everything from sunny beaches to potentially snowy mountains (and a couple of fancy cities) so it's a case of having to pack for every eventuality.
