Seems odd to have a sweepstake for the Olympics.
The USA always get the biggest medal tally. Nearest chance to beating that would be China then quite a drop off with GB, Russia, Korea, Germany, Australia all in contention. Russia's chances of getting in the top 3 highly diminished I'd have thought this time.

I think it was Beijing where everyone did it firstly on number of golds, then number of silvers, etc, except the American media, who simply did it by number of medals. China were top in the former, the US in the latter.
