I guess at least we're playing Uruguay last, given the injuries.
That opening try from Fiji was frigging awesome. What a unit that 14 is!
I actually though Wales played alright against a Fiji who threw everything at it, although a poor defensive error giving the final try to Wales made the scoreline flatter Wales a bit.
Looking at that Fiji side you just know with a bit more exposure to tier one sides they'd be a a tier one side themselves. Such magnificent skill and instinct married with huge physicality and athleticism. They fell off a bit towards the end and were fairly undisciplined but, by fuck, what a bunch of utter units.
I agree. Wales did OK, especially when we were able to dictate the tempo.
As mentioned in commentary how the fuck did they lose to Uruguay?
Tough game for Wales, Fiji attack was brilliant at times.
England v France is cancelled because of the typhoon!
Yeah just saw that. Bugger.
Poss also Scotland v Japan
Indeed. It made no sense watching how well they played against Wales.
England vs France and New Zealand vs Italy cancelled. Decision on Japan vs Scotland to be made Sunday morning.
Really, there was talk that games would be moved. That would mean that Scotland are out unless we lose to Samoa, and that is entirely possible.
eta that of course ensures Japan top spot and qualification. However if they were to lose to Scotland and if we beat Samoa by a bonus point, Japan would be out. Not that they deserve to go out, but something is stinking in pool A.
Safety first, yadda yadda etc, but I think England needed that game against France.
We've looked efficient but not anything special, and now could be going into a quarter final against the Aussies without having gone through the gears properly and in danger of getting caught out.
I wouldn't worry too much about that The Octagon. My heart says the Wallabies wil go all the way, but head says at the mo, England is the stronger side.
Though in WCs the aussies often has punched above their weight I feel.
At the mo, England seems to have a good combination of power, they were never known to be a non physical side, and pace, plus good ole Eddie has installed a good confident feel into the side.
Exactly my thoughts. England have barely broken a sweat and needed a proper work out but now we go straight into the knock out stage against top level opposition. The only good thing about this is that Jones will probably have a full squad to choose from and not many teams will be in the same position.
We all know this aussie team has it in them to beat anyone on their day but I do feel that England should be beating them 7 or 8 times out of 10.
Its an interesting comment about aussie rugby union punching above its weight. I didn't realise just how far down the pecking order it is in the national sport psyche till the last World Cup. My cricket team at the time had several aussies in it and we all went to a fan zone to watch Oz play on the big screens. None of them knew anything really about rugby union, it was all about cricket and AFL for them.
I'm getting way ahead of myself here, but I think that means victory against France will mean Wales will likely face New Zealand not SA in the semis. Poo.
Hope Japan Sco is played. I think the tournament deserves it, the Scots deserve the chance, and tbh Japan deserve the chance to top the group unbeaten. We can live without the others.
Yup, spot on. It'd be a real shame if the group finishes on a wash out. With so few 'crowd pleasing' fixtures in the group stages this one stood out as a massive game. Fingers crossed they miss the worst of the storm.
If the Japan v Scotland game is a wash out it does have implications beyond Scotland going home. Assuming Ireland win their last game with a BP then that would mean Japan and Ireland level on points. I think it then goes down to who won the head to head which of course was Japan. If I'm right that puts Ireland against the all blacks in the quarters.
Maybe a wash out isn't so bad for Japan after all?
I don't think that's right. I think if England beat Oz we play NZ or Ireland in the semi. Wales are on the other side of the draw and will play France in the quarters and the winner of Japan v SA if / when they beat France. The draw is actually opening up for Wales. Will they ever get a better chance?
ETA: I should probably caveat this by saying this all relies on the Japan v Scotland game either not going ahead or Scotland not getting the result they need if it does.
? Don't think so. Pretty sure Wales winning their group, then winning their QF (against whoever) would put them against SA in the semi. It's us (England) who get NZ in the semi if we win our QF
Edit: oops, didn't see the above
Also, Ghiraldini's career over for Italy without his final game
My mistake. NZ of course still finish top.
I feel for Scotland, but a little bit less so after reading this article when It looked like our game against Samoa would be cancelled, GT says “the rules are the rules” a bit of bad form there I think
Scotland in Japan: Ireland's final pool game could be cancelled because of 'Hurricane Haggis' - The Courier
Does that mean if the Irish game's cancelled, Scotland will go thru if they beat Japan by any score?
Not sure how I feel about that. Would like Japan to go thru, but I think Ireland's the better between them and Scotland.
Our game isn't cancelled, but IF it was then both Japan and Scotland would go through providing their game was played and Scotland won by any score.
I was just highlighting that my sympathy for Scotland* lessened when I read GT gleefully saying 'Rules are rules."
* I badly want the Japan vs Scotland game to go ahead as it is the standout game of the round. Two attacking sides going out to win.
Anyway good weather and a good pitch for Saturday
There have been some pretty churlish reactions re Scotland going out cos of cancellation. It will be rough, but they're actually in exactly the same position as Italy were in prior to the cancellation of their last game. Played three, lost one, yet to play the team that has played three and won three. If they do go out, it will be because Japan beat Ireland and they didn't, just as Italy go out because NZ beat SA and they didn't. It's rough, but it's not grossly unfair. It would have been far harsher on Ireland if they had gone out because their game with Samoa was cancelled.
Japan scotland going ahead.
Ah, good news
So, Wales ... no depth at all then?
7 - 6 at halftime against Uruguay, choose to punt it into touch when they have possession after the gong. Hmmm.
What was going on in the tunnel at half time in the Welsh game?
Wales need a bit of a kick up the rear during half-time. They seem very underpowered today.
