Rugby League World Cup

We're (Aus) leading the Kiwis 14 - 6 at halftime. Kiwis are shooting themselves in the foot. Indiscipline and bad decisions are killing them while we are showing patience and poise.

no we didn't i'm afraid (maoris vs aid). australia looking very powerful and in control. don't think matai should be on the field as he's clearly struggling with his hand and its hard enough playing oz with a full team, let alone one man down. lockyer is such a superb player, and thurston's is a good foil. think folau has looked lively as well. here we go again.

Kiwis are too bloody impatient. Forced bad passes lead to another Aus try. Please, no avalanche of tries from us now. Keep it close and tense.

Billy Slater just has too much individual brilliance to keep in check. Meanwhile Benji Marshall has been kept in check. Put down the glasses, this one is in the bag. Hope you Poms give us a better game.

Slater is a fantastic player, best full back in the world by a mile, that pass was astounding. the only ray of light for england are the knocks to tate and thurston. cameron smith was central to a lot of what was good going forward, very impressive display. reckon the kiwis might not be looking forward to png next week. well done the green and golds, huge performance today.

Damn. I was hoping for a competitive match. 30 - 6 is pretty comprehensive and the bloody Poms didn't look that great last night against PNG. Might as well hand another RLWC to us. Fuck. I wanted some tense matches.

great pic from yesterday.

don't be daft, Union's biggest strongholds in England are working class
just getting annoyed with all the rl bashing tbh. that threads thataway--------------------------------------->

so you watching the rlwc then jtg? ireland playing tonga in 30 mins.

Enjoyable contest between Tonga and Ireland, 22-20 to the south sea crew in the end, but very close throughout. My only moan would be about Ganson's reffing, far too whistle happy and overly punitive of the Tongans physicality (maybe due to memories of their epic punch-up with the GB team a few years back). Michael Jennings was outstanding for Tonga, Ireland did well considering and Blanch did very well for his hattrick.

I don't think there's been a bad match yet, the way they've set this up has possibly been shown to be sound already. England and NZ made some quite bad mistakes in their openers, Australia look pretty good, fingers crossed they've peaked too early.

I didn't see much of the footy over the weekend but did manage to catch the second half of Aus - NZ. I was a bit disapointed with NZ but at the same time thought Aus were bloody good. They have so much creativity in the halves, sometimes I forget how good a player Thurston is - and Lockyer still has a bit of life in him (although there aren't many decent 5/8 in the NRL behind him).
I think England may be able to complete in the forwards but I wonder about the backline.
What did people think of Inglis and Folau ? In my earlier post I said that's where I thought the difference may come and I haven't changed my mind.

A good start to the tournament though.

Inglis and Folau were outstanding i agree. Most of the Green and Golds were though, scarily strong. England will have to put in one hell of an improvement but the PNG game will at least give them some match sharpness. Burrow and particularly Pryce had quiet games and they came nowhere near Lockyer & Thurston who were bossing the game. So you could well be proved right about the difference being in the backs i reckon. Tony Smith has supposed to have been preparing for quicker smarter tactics and only has 4 recognised props in the squad which backs that theory - anyway, hope we can spring a bit of a surprise next week, we'll see.

This week's matches:

Friday, 31 October 2008 - Samoa v Tonga, 7:55am (this should be a cracker of a game, very big rivals, predicted to be a brutal battle between these sides)

Saturday, 01 November 2008 - Fiji v France, 6:25am
New Zealand v Papua New Guinea, 8:55am (png to spring a surprise?!)

Sunday, 02 November 2008 - Australia v England, 8:55am (come on England!!!)

Wednesday, 05 November 2008 - Ireland v Samoa, 7:00am
Scotland v Fiji, 9:00am

Well I'm glad you've laid that hoary old debate to rest so eloquently, Flashman. I'll rest easier tonight. :D

:D

Union is okay, just need to take out the boring stuff like kicking for touch, line-outs, scrums, rucks, mauls, penalties for farting et al and you'd be onto a winner.

I like the cunt who got knocked out, he said "fuck" on telly, also kicks penos nonchalantly

Great match this morning, some fantastic off-the-cuff gameplay, thrills and spills and thundering tackles, the Tongans had a lot of possession and pressure but the Samoans won out in the end by 20-12 which was probably a fair result, all things considered. Bit much for the Tongans backing up so quickly imo but looks like it will be Samoa going forward, can't really see Ireland troubling them greatly.

Fucking briliant match this morning, they were absolutely pounding each other. Loved it!

Did your coverage include the pre-game War Chants of the two teams? First the Samoans then the Tongans. the only better War Chant was in the game between teh indigenous Aussie team and the Maori team. in that one they both did their chant at the same time, advancing slowly toward each other until the indigenous spears were touching the bodies of the Maori players. An absolute hoot and all done in good spirits.

The War Chant last night really set the scene for a great, though sometimes ill disciplined, match. There was one point where a Tongan forward went to kick a loose ball and nearly kicked the head of a Samoan back off who was trying to fall on the ball. It's a pity teams like Tonga, Samoa and PNG (and I'll include the indigenous Aussie vs Maori game) don't get to play more international matches. The entertainment value alone is worth the price of admission.

The live tv coverage did include the hakas. But i overslept and missed them :o Caught them again in the evening on the pub tv replay and it was very intense and like you said, set the scene for quite a brutal match, but completely compelling. Leo Latu was outstanding i thought and unlucky to finish on the losing side,

Both games today very one-sided, fiji blew the french away which was a bit of a shock, the kiwis were clinical really against png who looked like they had run out of steam a bit after the england result. That's what i'm hoping anyway, cos otherwise, we're going to get fucking smashed tomorrow! :D

I really hope england can hold their own and put up a respectable performance, still not convinced that burrow should be included, pryce is due a very big game and purdham should be in the 17 at least, if not starting. Lets hope for a belter, good luck mate and i hope we give your boys one hell of a beating :)

My god but England have been awful. Very masterful and confident display from the Aussies, Inglis, Slater, Lockyer all different class. Oh dear....:(

Hey, it was a pathetic match and Australia's class shone through. I wanted and hoped for a competitive match. Not to be.

Why, oh why did you Poms switch from Great Britain to England? You were much more competitive as a combined side rather than this fragmented, unfocused effort.

Never mind, you will need to really attend to your match against the Kiwis. A re-match against us in the final may allow you to redeem yourself, or more humiliation, perhaps. :D

its a big worry really cos the kiwis blasted png yesterday so they're clearly improving whereas england seem to have managed to go backwards. confused, unconfident, sluggish, lacking verve or energy or passion most worryingly.
