Rugby League World Cup

come on lads, we've all had a drink here :D

first game just before ten, getting quite excited about it, i hope the england don't regret leabing out rob purdham (probably the best centre/loose forward there is). here we go...

:D It's nothing to do with being a 'rara'. And I think a competition in which 4 countries have won over a period of six tournaments must be regarded as, in fact, extremely competitive. Indeed, over the first six Football world cups, there were exactly the same number of winners.

Come on, the fact that the Australians have won practically every single Rugby League World cup is pretty ludicrous.

It's got sweet FA to do with being a rara in Wales. That's why league was able to decimate our national game in the 80s (compared to the generally wealthy English, who could afford not to take the devil's silver). That's why I hate league so much, and that's why its plaintive mewlings as it inexorably loses ground to the better code are such music to my ears :)

Oh, there's a certain delicious irony that union has the muscle to cherry pick the best players from league now.

The only issue is that, for all the tough league player stereotypes, very few seem to make the grade to any serious extent. With more talent and better coaching/full time training in union now there's usually better options on the union side.

Aye. Vainakolo and Farrell being prime examples. In league they were stellar; absolute superstars of the game. In union they're slow, shit and one-dimensional.

PNG looked lively, imaginative and hard as nails in defence. England looking a bit overawed and struggling atm. Here's where Tony Smith needs to earn his cash and really get them to up their game.

32-22 to England in the end. PNG deserve a great deal of credit for making it a close run thing, score line flatters England tbh. They ran some good angles, attractive with the ball in their hand i thought and some massive hits in defence. Stanley Gene was bossing things well for a 40-y/o (reputedly). Thought Wellens had a good game, Graham made some decent yards but there will need to be some major improvements before we hit up the Green and Golds next week.

Shame its on Sky, I would have watched some of the games if it were on terrestrial (despite being a Union fan).

Kiwi RL player endears himself to the population of Castleford.....:D

He told the paper: "A place in England called Castleford, in Yorkshire, up north in the middle of the country. You've got no idea. I think that and a town next to it called Pontefract. They rate in the 10 worst towns to live in in England, I've heard it rumoured.

It's dull, always grey, everyone just goes to the pub and drinks themselves silly, there's nothing for young people to do. It's really ugly. (There are) Too many mush-ohs - 'mates' in Yorkshire - they've got rotten teeth, need a bath, run around drinking, big beer belly, just watch the footie.

I think Super League, stopping the likes of Featherstone ever having a chance of a look in again, and summer rugby, as somebody who only wants to watch cricket in summer, are worse things.

Featherstone might be back in Super league sooner than you think! There are plans to sell off some land (they have a lot of it) which will get them 10 million pounds apparantly not quite sure if i believe but i have hope! We have Iestyn Harris sign for next year which is a big signing for us if we can get some results (we beat and drew with the 2 from NL1 who got the golden ticket)then Super League here we come!!!

Its wouldnt be before time either! I'm still bitter after the "Knock on" that never was in the 1998 grand final against wakefield and a disallowed kick that nobidy seemed to notice :hmm:

I hope you're right Stavross. The goalposts seem to move differently for other clubs though. Still, it looks like Wakefield won't be getting a super league ground any time soon. It'd only be just if Featherstone became the club for Wakefield and the Five Towns.

That would be fantastic :D! Would be good if we could get a new stand behind the posts like the Carneige stand at Headingly :D

Fucking Papua New Guinea! Rofl. Good job you didn't have to play Papua Old Guinea, they might have taught you a thing or two :p

PNG is the only country in the world to play RL as its national sport. they had to use tear-gas to clear the pitch following a match recently cos the crowd were so up for it. but best of all, the rugby league team did them proud today, as anyone who watched the match can confirm. i'm going to enjoy the competition no matter how many fucking rah-rahs try and disrupts things.

feth for super league no question :)

Says he, having been caught pants down, mooning the Rugby Union thread;):hmm:

Damned oik!
that would be why i have precisely one post on your precious RU thread yet you're the second biggest poster on this/my RL thread then woudl it? nothing worse than unrequited love methinks.....

can you do anything but sneer? if not, fuck off tbf :)

Sneer? Touchy, aren't you? Just a bit of banter. Hope you enjoy your WC. Sincerely :)

*leaves thread*

bye, its been moving.

scotland put up a good performance against france, last 10 minutes saw les blues stretch it out a bit but for the first 70 only one score in it. and now we're onto the main event if you like (how can you have an opening ceremony 3 games in? :o)

Did you Poms get to see the lead-up game to the Aus - NZ opener? It involved the NZ Maoris and the Aus Indigenous Dreamtime side. Great match with the Dreamtime side getting up. Great passing and the game flowed as it should. Damn, I wish all games were played like that one.

It wasn't part of the RLWC08 though, just an exhibition game.
