Roy Keane has left Sunderland

john barnes, david platt, shilton, gazza, klinsman, mark lawrenson, Gullit and bobby charlton to name a few who meet the great/shit criteria

maybe when you are really good there is no need to become a manager...or you traded the skills you need for management in for the ability to play better...

Wouldn't say Clough was "a great", he was definitely very good but only got 3 caps or something didn't he, although obviously he got injured too.

George Graham as well I suppose, the thing is theres very few good players who've transformed themselves into good managers.

Bobby Robson was the first example who came into my head, succesful player and even brilliant manager manager

Great players who have been successful managers

Kenny Dalglish, Didier Deschamps, MArk Hughes :hmm: Kevin Keegan :hmm: :hmm:

Clough: 197 goals in 213 league matches for Boro, 54 goals in 61 league games for Sunderland. Pretty great for me.

Not sure what happened with England, but great players do miss the boat occasionally, Kevin Hector* springs to mind.

*Didn't go into management, but he is probably the best postman in my area.

Yeah, I know he had a mental scoring record I've just never heard him ranked as a great before. Certainly not as a player anyway, perhaps his managerial career put paid to any chance of that?

Yeah what he did with us and F*rest overshadowed it a little.

He didn't even make that 100 best league players of a few years ago.

Criminal really.

How about the Genius of Robson?

Muppet manager. Wouldn't know talent if it bit him on the arse.
Earnshaw comes on as a sub and scores a hat trick in last ten mins of game. Still doesn't get a start next game.
Thats before we get onto Jason Koumas.

and of course the 66 world cup winners team...
maybe not Jack Charlton cause he was class for Ireland

there are more great/shit by a long way
