Rough Trade Open The UK's Biggest Record Shop

I stopped buying there because I got such off-hand service on a few occasions, like I should have been grateful to be there. I haven't got time for that shit. So I started ordering online, but I don't do that now – why spend your money in a shop you don't like?

ditto - gave up on them, shitty bastards

And why buy reggae at Phonica when the lovely Sounds of the Universe is around the corner, with friendlier service and superior tunes? :)

Beanos isn't dead it's staying open. i always like to think i will go some time to support it, but haven't ever been.

i aint been croydonways for ages generally.

Skim - Sounds of the Universe is my fave record shop round that way.

Buying online has revolutionised record shopping really, but good luck to them. It's great having unlimited time to listen to records, put together a wish list, listen to them again and then purchase - you just don't get that with a "real" shop.

There's no reason why technology couldn't give the record stores a helping hand too. How about entering the barcode on your mobile phone and having the tune played through a wireless network? Can't be too difficult to achieve.

They are good, aren't they? I gave them a whirl when Dub mentioned them and they sell a great range of tunes.

It makes sense for Rough Trade to go east. Parts of West London used to be a big focus for bands, youth culture etc: Kensington Market, Acklam Hall, Rough Trade, Better Badges, stalls under the Westway and just to the north of it, numerous gig venues in Hammersmith. But that's all pretty much ancient history now.

I was in Sounds Of The Universe last Friday and they were very friendly indeed.

Thing is, it's great buying online now. You can listen to all the sound clips and don't have to wait ages while the bloke in front of you on the listening decks takes half an hour to listen to one EP.

   GGGrrrrrr... yes, people who do that are scum. You should be able to suss out if you want a record in a minute or two MAX. folk who take ages should be dragged out of the shop and given a kicking.

camden would have been the obvious and infinitely superior location. i know of four record shops, inc the couple mentioned above, that have opened around brick lane/hoxton in last couple of years and have all shut down.

time shall tell.

Hopefully Sonik will be posting here shortly, offering us all loads of opening day freebies, launch invites, Rought Trade-branded underpants etc etc.
The reason for moving over to the East end is simple ....the Neal's Yard store has seen two rent reviews in as many years and the last one added something like 30% onto the yearly bill so a decision was made to move. Covent Garden has changed a lot over the years and sadly the smaller retailers are being forced out by the likes of Mango, Starbucks, Miss Sixty etc etc even Neal's Yard Remedies and Dairy are under threat. We looked in an awful lot of areas but for one reason and another the East end seemed the logical place for us to move to. Luckily there was a large space available in the Truman Brewer and we took it, a bold move considering it's 5000 sq foot.

Whatever peoples views are on this new shop opening i for one can tell you a lot of hard work has gone into this project.
Anyone interested in reading the press release which will give you an idea of what to expect in the next few months can seen it here >>

I can post up a month long list of instore events on Monday, most of which are FREE if that's ok with the Editor or you can check out the link above.

Knowing what the instores are would be good!
They start in August 6th and run for one month, I can't say anymore until Monday but they'll be some super good ones.

i don't think the mailing list subscription function works - you enter your email and then it throws up a tick box but beyond that nothing seems to happen. Is this your doing? :D

Nope but that is correct, granted it's a little weird but its to do with our mailing system, you've subscribed i just checked. I will personalise the mail out for you on Friday!

to be fair to Rough Trade, they're pretty good at avoiding that sort of toss

Anyone interested in winning tickets to the opening party which is on Thursday this week needs to go into the East end store and play a guessing game. It will be well worth it i can tell you. There are four tickets up for grabs.

That link no longer works sadly. Used to shop in Rough Trade when in London. Hope the new shop goes well. Good luck to 'em!
