Yep, Bobbi & Steve have been on this since the beginning, including their own productions.

As Zoo Experience back in 92...

    And 2002...

This really, although certainly tunes can have a tougher/grittier production and still fit into the soulful house sound - this one comes to mind...

    (Another NJ biggie!)

I think I mentioned the King Britt remix of this in the Ursula Rucker thread for a bit of common-or-garden soulful deep business.

Will upload a mix I did that uses a fair few tunes in this thread - It was for a pals wedding and supposed to be the soundtrack to our clubbing heyday - easily the most pleasurable mix I've ever had to do!

i was thinking about this question - i think the way to approach it is not from the world of banging EDM but from gospel, soul, the best sides of disco, pre 88 house music. Do you like Stevie Wonder?

I like Soul and Funk but I can't see how soulful house is a progression on that stuff. At least old Curtis Mayfield stuff had some sort of (I don't want to say rawness) but it had a very tactile feel to it. This stuff sounds too perfect.

It's a very loose connection tbf. See also Funk vs Funky house.

I think the original soulful tunes were more gospel inspired/related, and the original NY big hitters all sounded like they went home after Church on Sundays and made music with a 100 strong choir in mind  The the dreamier influence crept in though as they were of a similar tempo/energy and the name stuck. I agree tt does sound a bit too perfect - but I kind of like the full on epic warbling diva raw talent juxtapose with the most basic of drum presets (not that there isn't 'better' soulful music, though none of that really reminds me of my 20s!)

i can understand being put of by smooth and silkyness - it can grate - but for me this kind of music is a happy place, a comfort blanket. i like it raw most of the time, but theres a side of me that can take comfort in this too. Its one of the few times i listen to major-chord music too - have to go there sometimes! Love a nice chord progression....

Cheers dude! I didn't catch Ron this time round but caught him last year at Plan B and have heard him play a few long sets over the years. He's an exceptional DJ, one of only a few who manages to join the dots between Jazz and House and make it sound relevant. He's done a new song called "In Time" which is a follow up to Crossroads, it features the same vocalist. "In Time" is amazing too, really stellar production.

Yeah that Sandman tune is a killer, I first heard it on a Theo Parrish mix up on Soundcloud earlier this year.

sounds great - would love to hear a set (might go for a searchabout later) - if anyone has a link please post

making that connection with house and the live music of the pre-house era is the key here, and the more sophisticated producers can go there - its there in that Sandman tune you posted, its there in loads of Louie Vega productions, its there when guys like Theo Parrish do their live showcases (and on his records too), its there on big Jazzanova numbers and so on - and even if some producers dont have the skills or musicians at their disposal i think thats kind of the connection theyre drawing on.....

love that! all the lets celebrate and give thanks for life shit - sometimes it really hits the spot - love the message in reggae too - switch off all cynicism and get lifted
Dont think i posted this on the thread yet - another Kerri Chandler killer (200k viewers cant be wrong) - different mood to the gospel one above though, relationship all gone wrong on this one...love the bitter sweet melody
