Ronaldo

How many Champions league games had Ronaldo had any influence it?, just out of interest?;)

not been following football much then.

The bullshit about him disappearing in big games is based soley on the semi final in Milan, it's absurd as he got absolutely not support and had two men on him all the time, not to mention that AC Milan and Kaka where playing a devastated United defence.

What did kaka do in the CL final?

Enjoying the tackle from Portsmouth's Number 16, about 1 minute in. Can just imagine the got the ball ref gesture immediately afterwards. That or the it's a fair cop, you're not gonna book me since we're all mates here.
:)

Yep, he's a bit of a cock. But fuck me is he talented.

That sums up perfectly how I feel about him. No matter how much I want him to get sent off and to miss penalties, you can't help but gasp in admiration at his clinical finishing and skills.

He has the potential, in my view, to be the greatest player of all time.

It was your standard toe poke drilled just above the wall. James was deliberately static to make it look better than it was.

It was brilliant actually

I heard him saying a coupla weeks ago that he'd been practising relentlessly exactly what he pulled off last night. Some new technique hes worked out. Goalkeepers should be very very afraid (as should anyone who hasn't made him their captain in their fantasy team yet ;)

It looked like he "potted" it like a snooker shot, centre of the ball, outside edge of the right boot giving a slight swerve away from the keeper.

Great fucking free-kick.

Apparently he lines up the ball so he strikes the valve, gives it some kinda power/swerve reaction, also looks like he sort of strikes up through ball, very nearly a toe poke but with the top of his foot, amazing skill.

Still think Ronaldinho's got the edge on him, when fit of course.

nah Fergie has said the thing about the valve is bollocks.

Well Fergie would say that in fairness. I've seen Ronaldo looking for the valve before placing the ball. Rooney is a better all round player imo, but they are a superb partnership no doubt about it, and they can only get better.

Still reckon Messi is the greatest at the moment. He just took the total piss last night against Villareal.

Regardless of Ronaldo, what is quite interesting is that nobody ever seems to name "greatest players in the world" who aren't strikers or attacking midfielders. This may be for another thread, but yesterday in the general forum I mentioned Multiple Intelligence theory and I think it applies to football too. What Ronaldo, Kaka, Messi, Ronaldinho, Totti, et al do is immediately spectacular and has much to be admired about it. But is there not value in assessing defenders and goalkeepers in terms of the roles they're meant to perform as opposed to those of their upfield team-mates? Micah Richards seems to get attention when he bombs forward for example, but I would say his strengths lie in reading the game quickly and applying his attributes to prevent opposition progress. Similarly, Shay Given has few rivals as a shot-stopper, but won't ever get nominated for player of the year. This isn't a modern phenomenon, as Moore, Yashin and Baresi will never be up with Pele, Maradona and Cruyff in popular polls, but I'm not sure that is down to their lack of ability in what they did. Likewise, I don't rate Zidane, Henry, Raul, Del Piero, etc as the best player I can remember, but Paulo Maldini, a right-footer who is almost universally acknowledged as the greatest left back ever.

Back on topic, I can't doubt Ronaldo's ability, but the true test of greatness for him will come as he matures. Can he develop his game, adding new strings to his bow as, for example, his pace starts to go in a similar way to Ryan Giggs? Will he assert himself on an international tournament? Would he be as effective in a team without so many other high quality players (I'm saying he has to do that on purpose, just if the situation arises outside of his control)? To be truthful, I think Giggs is undoubtedly the model for how his career ought to progress, although he will doubtless get future opportunity in the international tournaments never given to Giggs.
