There is Something About Mary is one of the best modern romantic comedies and despite the gross out jokes it's a rather sweet film. Any film that has the wonderful Jonathan Richman as a greek chorus is doing something right.

I love Jack Black as much as the next woman, but I still am not enamoured with the Farrelly films. I thought The Heartbreak Kid was bordering on misogyny. :(

Exackly. Not big, clever, funny or even romantic in the least.

The strange thing was that the distributors were trying to market it as a rom com. :confused: I was wondering if they'd actually seen it.

It got them the worst reviews of their career to be fair. It's also a remake of a 70's classic I love, so I didn't bother to go and see it.

Yeah, I have gone off him recently. Tim Bisley is still hot, but the actual Simon Pegg is starting to whiff of desperation :(
 
There are a lot of shit rom coms out there.

But there are also some gems.

I like Shaun of the Dead for instance. Its a zom rom com.
Love actually has been mentioned.

I watched the heartbreak kid the other night expecting it to be crap but found it suprisingly funny. Yes, the main character was mysoginist but that was kinda the point. Had me laughing out loud more thanonce.

I must admit I did laugh out loud but I had to go and beat myself with sticks afterwards.

I'll never get tired of watching Clueless :D Among so many other qualities, it has the prototype Harsh Dad. My dad loves it for similar reasons :D

I didn't even find it that distasteful or anything, neither did anyone watching it with me.

Great use of "you fucking cunt" when applying suncream... the gay wedding planner moment was a touch of genius, Jerry Stiller is always a pleasure to watch. By no means a great comedy, but better than most mainstream US comedies.

Thought of another good one, Just Friends... was above average.
