Now, i love Rod Stewart in a best of type way.

Fave tracks - Maggie May, You Wear it Well, Stay with Me, Reason to Believe, Killing of Georgie, Country Comforts, I Was Only Joking

What would be the best Rod/Faces studio albums to start with?

    Good starting points....

Every Picture Tells a Story is a Faces album in all but name...

Cheers. I was attempting to sell young Rod to a girl at work in her 20s, who only knows old Rod :(.

I played her Stay With Me, enthusing about what a fantastic song it is - she was disgusted and angered by the lyrics:facepalm:
Should have played her You Wear it Well

All the Faces albums. (There's a very good box set).

Solo: Gasoline Alley, Every Picture Tells a Story, Never a Dull Moment. (All with the Faces all over them).

I am too. I think it's the last one that had the guy who went on to be part of Pilot (Quinine, Quotillion, Quarrelsome something... editor will probably know, being a big fan of theirs).

I was thinking of Martin Quittenton, the guitarist and co-writer of some of Rod's best songs. I thought he joined Pilot, but it isn't mentioned on his wiki page: Martin Quittenton - Wikipedia

A lot of Rod's lyrics are pretty dodgy. Remember "Tonight's The Night"?

I LOVE Rod. Had floor seats to see him (on my Mums bloody birthday - the actual day!) at the o2 in December and he had to cancel. Both her and I were heartbroken :(

Still never seen him do this live. Everything else but never this. I think I would explode :p

I decided to start at the very beginning (its a very good place to start etc) so have been listening to First Step. Fantastic. What a band they are and what a singer rod is.

Incidentally I got awful confused when on spotify it said First Step was by Small Faces, as I thought they'd dropped the Small after Stevie left, and Rod was never in the Small Faces. After a bitta Googling it turns out in America that album has always been under Small Faces, even to this day. Dunno why

I love watching their old live videos. What a good-time band eh? They always look like they're having real fun - no shoegazing here.

And is named so on the edition that's in the box set You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything (review here: New Faces box set to feature rarities, outtakes and unreleased material - Uncut)

Though when I first saw it, in vinyl, it said "Faces" not "Small Faces".

Have to have a hard heart not to like Rod's disco sexbomb years. 'D'ya think I'm sexy?', 'Killing of Georgie', love it.

    Even love 'Sailing'.

Steve Jones was on the Marc Maron podcast and mentioned how much he loved Rod and the Faces, and how influential they were on him, but stated it all went wrong when Rod went to America "He turned into a ponce.. Britt Ekland ponced him right up...a perfumed ponce".

He's crass, but he has a point

I prefer the PP Arnold version. But yes it's a great song and Rod is great at it.

PP Arnold's version is much better imo as is Cat Steven's original but I shouldn't really make a judgement as I'm not a Rod fan.

Been listening to a bit of Creedence lately - think there's a bit of crossover with some of the faces songs in sound
