The received wisdom is that there were no real secrets in Hollywood back then. During the studio system days, the studios would even arrange marriages of conveniences for big stars who were gay, just so they'd appear to 'conform'.
Hudson was a B movie actor, not the worst by any means. As for the innuendo, his name has a place in NA culture for better or worse. I don't think the perception of him is one of anger or rejection: at first it was disbelief, followed by a certain amusement/bemusement, but not without a bit of sympathy for the predicament that he found himself in, as mentioned by another poster.
