Robin Williams

Liked Toys.

Also mrs. doubtfire where that gravely voiced jewish bloke whose name escapes me played his brother

No, seriously. He's the same in all his movies except for Popeye where he was forced to take on a whole different persona - or in some ways he fit the character perfectly. I can't stand his movies because it's just like watching John Wayne.

I don't get the John Wayne thing but, if it's there, I'd like to. How are you seeing the parallel?

It's the way they both carry the same mannerisms from one character to the next, one movie to the next. John Wayne was worse by far. It's something you'd expect from character actors and less from leading ones. I think when you're an actor you should try to become someone other than yourself when you're playing a role so your personal ways of speaking and facial expressions aren't given to each character. It gets boring right quick like listening to Van Halen. I like actors that seem like totally different people from one movie to the next.

See also: Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson*

*the latter at least until he got old and started playing sad old men instead.

Okay, so John Wayne always played John Wayne regardless of the setting and pretty much ditto Robin Williams?

John Wayne was worse. They wrote 'John Wayne' movies for him to play John Wayne. And he did it every time.

Bill Murray turns my stomach. Even Robin Williams doesn't do that.

I suppose the thing about Murray is he doesn't stretch too far, you assume because he has a sense of his own limitations. Well, based on the little I've seen.

There are too many Bill Murray films I love with too many performances from Bill Murray that I love for me to dislike him. I don't mind him being Bill Murray because I like that. He makes no pretence at being a Great Actor either.

Him in Groundhog Day, and Carrey in Truman Show, are probably two of my favourite performances ever. I mean, you can point to other things like Nicholson in one flew over..., but what I love about those two films is their mixture of the comical and the profound. Only a generally-comedy-orientated actor could pull that off, when in a 'serious' mode.

Groundhog Day. Ghostbusters. Even Scrooged.

Nothing wrong with always acting the same (or pretty similar) character if that character's fun to watch.

Exactly.

Good comedy takes exquisite timing. It's rare to find that timing. But when someone has it, it's an amazing thing when it's applied to tragi-comedy.

And Lost in Translation seems to be one of those love it or hate it films. Personally, I loved it sooooooooo much.

Ghostbusters is one of his greatest, although it's a very funny film as well as just Murray. Egon Spengler is hilarious, as is ackroyd.

I love the scene in the mayor's office, the 'yes, it's true, this man has no dick' is impeccable, and then there's the line from Murray: "If I'm wrong, nothing happens. We go to jail. Peacefully. Quietly. Nicely. If I'm right.. If I'm right, then you will have saved the lives of millions of registered voters." :D :D :D
