King of Comedy is also a masterpiece.

Aye but de niro just became a big headed twat from that movie. Taxi Driver was the last film where he obeyed what the director wanted and not vice versa.

I voted for Taxi Driver, but that list makes 2 glaring omissions: his performances in Once Upon A Time in America and (the always forgotten masterpiece) New York, New York are equally brilliant - if not quite so extraordinary.

I think my fav movies in that lot are Goodfellas and Taxi Driver. The most legendary performance is Raging Bull, on account of the weight gain thing. The one where I really started noticing him though was Cape Fear. In a lot of the others he's kindof the same character.

Love both. Watched New York, New York again recently and it only gets better with time, very underrated film.

As always these polls leave out my favourite  :

Once Upon a Time in America. Not only is it my favourite film of his, it's also a performance that shows great range. I'd drop Casino from the poll, which was just a tired rerun of his turn in the superior Goodfellas.

This isnt a poll where we debate what films should be included in the list but a poll about...yes you guessed it....De Niros greatest ever role

If you dont like the list then perhaps you can vote in the conveniently placed 'other' option. :p

I did. I just like bitching about polls. :p

Raging Bull for me. I had it on video for years and watched it sooo many times. The tension in some scenes just tore me apart and the fight scenes were immense

although Goofellas and taxi driver are amazing performances, the way he balances the knife-edge of lunacy within truly realistic frames of reference in "King of Comedy" is breathtaking. It's the one that makes me, as an actor, stop in disbelief and awe.

Yep, it's a difficult one between 'Taxi Driver' & 'The King of Comedy'.

I can't really decide. :)

i went for raging bull,

the character that he played and the extremes he went to to get into the character are well documented i.e that all the weight he put on was all real and he Jake la motta, debateably said he was probably in the top 20 fighters in the world at the time.

De niro is probably the best method actor ever, imo anyway. He's darkly intense in raging bull, and he was deeply depressed after the role because he knew that he would never get into a character like that ever again.

His latest escapades in the nineties and recently prove that.

His descent into catatonia in Awakenings is pretty good. I always get distracted by the nurse who's really Marge Simpson though.

No word for his marvellous playing of Harry Tuttle? It says something of the man that he would do something like Brazil.

Terry Gilliam on working with De Nero

sorta reprise- what the fuck has happened to RDN over the past decade or so ? I cannot think of anything half decent he has done since maybe Midnight run....surely he doesnt need the money ?
