Robbie's Calling

*looks up from table, face covered in diced carrot, a single tear moving slowly down his boke covered face while 'angels' plays in the background*

i'm having my 'carrie' moment

I used to like him. This track is complete nob arse. He is crap without Guy Chambers methinks

I'm more interested in what Gary Barlow's doing these days, because on the basis of the Take That back catalogue he could write some crackers for the Youngs, Bedingfields and Lemars or this world.

Or more preferably, he could stay in obscurity and leave the shite predictable chart fodder to the bovine twats who churn it out month after month... Take That's back catalogue isn't worth shit, all their major tunes were covers anyway...

Well that last point is a crock of shit; "Pray", "Never Forget", "Back For Good", "Relight My Fire", "Could It Be Magic". And if you look at the TT thread you'll find I'm not alone in this thinking.

Aaaargh... Made it to the second line of the song and switched off before urge to kick computer overcame me..
Bad is an understatement

Dan Hartman did Relight My Fire. His version was much better. Back for Good is a great song.

Glad other posters felt the need to point out the obvious...

Covering Barry Manilow for Christ's sake - what next, David Essex?

The world in general, with the exception of notoriously fickle teenage girls and disturbed young men, doesn't need any more plastic disposable meaningless pop bands who care more about their haircuts than their music.

In my humble opinion, naturally.

Should have died with the Osmonds, that whole thing, but oh no... there'll always be a market for kid's music, just as there'll always be a market for people rightly calling it a load of old shite.

To be honest, the only respect I've ever had for Robbie was when he saw through that whole marketing machine thing and slagged it off, even if it was for a stab at credibility.

I feel the same way about Take That, Girls Aloud, and whatever else the record companies decide will sell in the millions to impressionable kids, as I do about McDonalds hamburgers.

Instantly forgettable, bland, mass-produced shite, and an insult to the intrisically more fascinating cultural legacy it claims to be a part of.

You might think it's a harmless thing, it's just pop music, but when you've got greedy record company reps forcing young women to have abortions rather than stop recording and promoting over-produced faux "music" purely for profits (as recounted in the All Saints story) then it becomes a little more sinister, and something that needs to be challenged.

I have visions of myself yawning at hearing a load of rockist bollocks yet again. First of all whilst I am young man, I am not disturbed. Girls Aloud and the Spice Girls lie right next to Ghostface Killah and Squarepusher respectively in my CD racks, so I hardly keep myself hidden in my pop world.

Pop music has certain parameters in that the package is part of art as well as simply the music. Girls Aloud and Take That in truth have a lot more than 5 members each and through that they have been able to produce such zeitgeist-finding music. The imagery part of the package is hardly exclusive to pop music; would Babyshambles or Nirvana sell anywhere near what they do if they didn't shag supermodels or commit suicide?

I think you're being harsh on youngsters with your "impressionable young kids" jibe. They certainly managed to see that One True Voice had shite songs and that Girls Aloud were awesome when they were launched in identical circumstances. Yes they make mistakes (Boyzone/Westlife) but then the world would be a lot better without some guitar bands (hello Coldplay). The accusations flung at pop can also be directed at any number of other genres.

Actually, I have to admit that after a few listens, I rather like 'Tripping' - it's kind of amiably gawky.

Incidentally I think that any Clash comparison is certifiable - it's The Police at the other end of a bifter all the way. Fact.
